How many books did Hermes Trimegistus really write?

-or was he actually a whole lineage of people? Was he a god (thoth?) ? Does the hermetic rituals laid out to the Egyptians provide ascension from mortality? Inquiring minds want to know!

If rapidly failing memory serves, he was sort of an alchemist type in ancient Greece. He would actually have written "scrolls" not books, but let that pass. The term "hermetically sealed" is taken from his name. All of this is fuzzy in a "1066 and all that" sort of way. I imagine the Net would have a fair amount of info on him.
