I keep accumulating library fines on purpose so I can feel I'm doing my civic duty by paying them. It's my little way of contributing.

I work at a library and have no sympathy for people who have overdue fines. Most libraries have policies posted in the branch and or on the library card applications. We have ours posted everywhere, and we have take away flyers too. Our customers can check out items for up to 9 weeks, (initial checkout and 2 renewals) that's plenty of time. We still get customers almost daily that owe upwards of $50 in fines, and sometimes it's all late charges. Some of them get really angry that they were reported to collections, but it's their own fault. It's easier to take responsibilty and just pay the fines, many libraries allow payment plans to be set up, rather than deal with a black mark on your credit.

Actually, no. Having worked in a library, I realize how important the money from fines can be, especially nowadays when many libraries are seeing budgets being cut. Money from fines is used to help make the library better, and purchase new books for you to check out. I just see paying fines from me missing due dates as an additional way of helping out, although the best way to avoid them is still returning items ontime.

No, from working in a library, I know that the fines always catch up with you...you're going to have to pay it sooner or later, so might as well skip the scorched soles :)

Actually, if the fine was from a PUBLIC libaray that received funding from the government, I'd pay it immediately. Walking through fire will hurt, but having a debt to the government (even a very tiny one) can hurt a lot worse.

They simply locked my library account last week due to this!
I had no other choice than bring the book back and pay the fee - if I still want to borrow other books in the future!
You either pay or you forget the books.
I voted for the books!

I wait for the twice a year "Canned Goods for fines" food drive...they clear my fines for $1 per can of .49cent peas and the local food bank benefits too. Painless.
