I mean...like, what do you guys do? Do you think of a topic and go off from there? Do you play a good toon you like on an instrument and then build the lyrics on the music? Do you write lyrics and then figure out what music would go well with it? What are your techniques? Me- I sorta just write the lyrics and then make up a toon. But, it is different for everyone.

What do you do?

I have a number of melodies that have come about through playing around with the guitar or piano. then I'll be going through my day, and a topic or phrase will catch my attention. I'll build up a lyrical chorus, then start thinking about which melody it might fit into. Eventually I'll start filling out the backstory (almost all my songs are anecdotal) and the lyrics round themselves out.

The easiest part: writing the music that plays underneath the lyrics, between choruses. As long as you don't mess with the key too much, almost anything simple will do.

The hardest part: The bridge! The bridge! The bridge! A great bridge can make or break a great song. Most beginning songwriters don't even think about it. Pearl Jam writes great bridges. Led Zeppelin used to take the bridges out of earlier songs and form entirely new songs from them. ("Whole Lotta Love" started as a bridge from "Dazed and Confused.") A lot of the softer rock bands from the 70's, such as Ambrosia and The Little River Band, wrote great bridges.

There's no right or wrong way. As you probably know, it's a very personal process, and each songwriter finds there own way. Good luck, hope to hear some of your music someday!

well it depends, sometimes lyrics come along pretty easy along with a tune, but some times are the lyrics the ones that gives you a match in the chord,
there isn't a precise rule that i know of but the genre gives you a priority to compose,

take the happy birthday for example, you can sing it with or without words and still you know its the happy birthday, that's because both music and lyrics are the same but non all songs follow the same rule, a pretty practical tool will be try to constantly write down verses and sonnets or just simple rimes, and build up a database of things that may fit in some part of the lyric process,

then after with your or an instrument you will give them the proper Notes to fit in your song

hope this helps

I certainly don't do it well or often enough but. .
I concentrate on the FEELING, usually heart related, lonely or joy, and then write like mad. After a few pages I see if there is a chorus or verse or some phrase that is particularly melodic. The I try to pick out the melody in my head on my guitar. I try not to be afraid to be ordinary. so what if the melody is pentatonic or just arpeggios? Then if I have patience still, push the other words around for a while, or try it again in a few days, months, years
I have a whole junkyard of half songs or verses waiting for a chorus. I have tried writing with friends but I get too mad, its too personal!!

Its almost always the words then the music

Uhm. I've usually written a song from what i'm feeling at the moment. I don't write them off like assembly line speed, but sometimes i get inspired, mostly by people i know or things that i think or feel, and go from there. I try to keep as true to my feelings as i can, because then what's the point? It usually takes me 3 days to finish writing a song and feel good about it.

I think I end up doing all the above. I've had a melody come to me with no words, I've had them both come together, I've been at the studio listening to beats and had them both come also. The best songs are the ones written with passion though, when I'm really going through some shh and I write a song about it.

if u mean make up a song by your self u have got the right person to ask the question to!!! I AM A SONG WRITER!! first u have to think of a topic like if its about love think about the person u love and what kind of personality they have then write about sad or happy things that have to do with the topic then write details and then the hardest part put it into words and sentences (try to make it rhyme or make sence!)
