Parties control the followers' freedom of indep. expression. How do one country can claim to be democratic?

There are two meanings here. One democratic means we vote to decide policy the other is the "democratic party" which has a certain set of values it expouses that are different from that of the other dominant political party the "republican party".

you are given the control to choose which party should control your freedom. Isn't it democratic?
