It has to be on the main stand. You'll have a side-to-side imbalance if you don't; very dangerous!

If the bike isn't on the centre stand you can't set the pressure properly because the air will already be compressed from the weight of the bike. The forks have to be fully extended with no weight on them. Shortcuts aren't an option on a motorcycle. Stay safe.

Let me give you a little trick for getting it on the center stand. Get it ready for the center stand hold your front brake, push front end down and pull back the bike. Don't stop the motion either way. This works for me. If not then get some body to help you get it up so you can check your pressure correctly.

I have an 82 GL 1100, and mine is not hard to get on the center stand, but you don't need to any way, a lb one way or the other ain't gonna matter that much

-The PSI reading won't be an accurate #.
-While riding the bike, figure if you want the suspension stiffer or softer.
-Stop, turn off the bike and while sitting on it, check what the gauge reads.
-Add/release a couple of PSI, then take it for a ride. Keep experimenting until you get it right.
-When you get it to your liking, take note as to the reading on the gauge for future reference.
-This ain't rocket science. LOL

i have a GL1800. it is best to put it on the center stand but not a must. side stand is OK just dont sit on it while your setting it. also, you might want to change the way you get it on the center stand. its more leverage than strength to get it on. it is the only way you can check the oil and other fluids.
