Turkey has been occupied by the Turks since about 1200 AD. The Turks were fearsome warriors who also conquered southern Europe, the Middle East, Egypt, Tunis, Libya and Algeria. Their empire, The Ottoman Empire, lasted until the end of WW1, when it fell apart. The British and the French occupied most of its territories. Turkey itself went through a revolution inspired by the army, and Ataturk established Turkey as a modern country with a modern, secular constitution.
Turkey has always been a Muslim country. However, the state is adamantly secular, which creates great tension in Turkish society. Turkey has significant problems with certain minorities such as the Kurds, and the Greeks and Turks hate each other.
Turkey is very mountainous and scenic. Turks are quite open to Americans and travel there is safe and inexpensive. Just don't violate the drug laws!

I know that the Anatolian Peninsula was once the domain of the Greeks. For thousands of years it was populated by Greeks until the Seljuk Turks descended on the Middle East from Central Asia. They virtually annihilated the Greek population of the Anatolian, then under the control of the Empire of Byzantium. The Seljuks then repopulated the Anatolian as a Turkish state, with Islam as its religion. They took Constantinople, the Great City that sat on Straits of Marmara and guarded the entrance to the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea. The Turks looted, raped, and pillaged the city, again, decimating the Greek population that had called the region home for thousands of years.
I know that the other Christian powers of Europe sat idly by and let this tragedy occur. But when the greedy Ottomans started to push further into Europe, they reached as far as the Gates of Vienna, before a combined army repulsed them, and over time drove them back to the shores of Turkey. If only that Army had existed a few hundred years earlier, and the Byzantine Empire had been saved, Turkey would be a much better place today.
