"Harassment becomes illegal when an employer, supervisor or co-worker harasses a person because of their race, color, creed, ancestry, national origin, age (40 and up), disability, sex, arrest or conviction record, marital status, sexual orientation or membership in the military reserve. Harassment may include verbal abuse, epithets, and vulgar or derogatory language, display of offensive cartoons or materials, mimicry, lewd or offensive gestures and telling of jokes offensive to the above protected class members. The behavior must be more than a few isolated incidents or casual comments. It involves a pattern of abusive and degrading conduct directed against a protected class member that is sufficient to interfere with their work or create an offensive and hostile work environment." Sexual harrassment and hostile workplace environment rules say that you basically cannot do or say anything that could be deemed offensive. You basically don't want to make any remarks that could be seen as sexual, discriminatory, off-color or what have you. Also, its a no-no to do or say anything to anyone that can be seen as disrespectful or unprofessional. I used to work in the HR department for a big bank and that's pretty much it. Don't even joke about sex or who is fat or ugly in the office, but it WILL get around.

Why....what did you do? Your company should have their policy posted in a very public area, fax room, employee/staff break room. The company's policy and definition of improper conduct in the work environment should also be in your employee handbook.

my son works at safeway in the meat dep. another employee followed him back to the cooler and blocked my son from leaving the area she also grabbed the case of meat out of his hands and the pushed him in the shoulder trying to provoke him to doing something. He made a report to his manager while this was all on camera how long must he continue to have to work with this employee before they make a decision on what to do about this. he is filing a report at the police station now. is there anything else he needs to do? restraining order perhaps? any info would be great thanks.

Anything that would cause another work member to feel uncomfortable could be considered harrasment. Even if your actions were not directed towards said workmate, they can still be considered harassment.
