i honestly believe that the ones we have now are humane, but i think the person who killed sould die the same way their victim did, wether its humane or not its the pain the other person had to feel before they died. any comments on this?

What might be nice is to let the family and immediate relatives of the victim carry out the sentence in any manner they want. After all, the killer (if it was a murder) did not give the victim a choice. If they want to club him, stone him, stab him slowly with knitting needles, clamp his nostrils shut and tape his mouth, nail gun his head with 4 inch nails, whatever. Strap him down to a chair and let them go to work. They would be given 1 hour in which to complete the task.

If this type of capital punishment existed it might give a lot of criminals pause before they go out and commit their dastardly deeds.

What is great about America is that we are a civilized nation. Lynch mobs and Salem witch hunts are no longer venerated. The death penalty can't be tailor-made. We can all be glad that we enjoy a justice system where men with barbaric third world country mentalities aren't arbitrarily handing down punishments. Under Islamic law you can get your hand cut off for steeling. How many of us would be walking around without our hands? Ouch! Well, maybe it might be more interesting to cut off the hands of the Enron exec's rather than spend $40,000. a year plus to incarcerate and feed them for 20-30 years. Taxpayers beware! I don't know, punishment in this country can be problematic, but the alternatives are unacceptable in our culture. Why is there not the same mentality concerning the death penalty?

The biggest problem with the death penalty for me is that some people are actually innocent that are put to death, i.e., the Innocence Project and DNA. If only one person was innocent who was put to death then that should cause our society to reconsider, at the very least, our method of execution.

We have the greatest criminal justice system money can buy. (I say that with tongue in cheek) I really do believe our justice system is superior to that of other countries, but it is not without flaws by any stretch of the imagination. It is not the middle class or the wealthy that you find in prisons/death row, it is minorities and the poor that are disproportionaltely represented. I am Caucasion so I am not getting a plug in here for minority civil rights. It is just a fact.

The "Scott Petersons" of death row represent just a very very very small fraction (.00001) of inmates in prisons across the country who are going to be put to death. The media sensationalizes these obscure horrific crimes, and we love it too. That's why we are glued to the TV watching CSI, CSI Miami, Navy CSI, Close to Home and Criminal Minds. (Those are just a few on the list) We have a natural morbid sense of curiosity when it comes to crime, death and punishment.

In California, Arizona and Texas, it is the gang members who are disproportionaltely represented on death row for killing each other over geographic location and drugs. What a pathetic commentary on the barrios of this nation. Still, we're killing our sons, and sometimes their our foster sons.

If you look at the death penalty from a distance (like the moon looking down on planet earth) it is just safer policy to give them a lethal injection and be done with it. Believe me, it is the death part that is the big deal. If you asked any one of them if they would take torture over death they'd all jump at the chance to live. It is the death part that looms over them every day they wake up on death row. And you can see it in their eyes too folks. Something like the look of a mouse caught by a cat. Dazed and stunned. But then, death is the final pronouncement on your life. The death penalty is not only the end of your life, it is the last statement made about your life, i.e., you really should never have been born. They get it too! Anyway, do we all have to be that blood thirsty?

Eye for an eye! If you had a child that was murdered would you want the person who did it to live in prison at your expense? Taxpayers expense. Eating meals regularly, watching cable television, showers? Not me. I have kids and I don't think anything could come close to the pain that someone feels. Happening to them directly or indirectly. But, I do think the government needs a law "overhaul".

What does that really accomplish, except to prove that we are on the same level as the offender? Listen, I used to work in the prison system. I knew a warden who oversaw the executions of hundreds of inmates. I'll never forget one thing that he told me: He always spoke with the victim's family after the execution took place and asked them if it brought them peace to watch the man (this was a men's prison) die. They always said that it did not.

I don't really think it matters much on how they are put to death, but I think it should be televised. If people actually saw it happen instead of just hearing about it, it might be more affective on people's mindset on whether they should commit a crime that is punishable by death. Also, it should happen much quicker, this waiting 10 to 15 years to see justice completed is ridiculous.

I hate the death penalty, and I really hope the US will abolish it someday.

For now, if there are states that are going to execute people, I think it should be done in the most humane way possible.

Why would we want to behave the same way as those animals who are deemed the worst of all offenders? If we are going to have the death penalty, it should be humane.

firing squad
now there is a good method
i do not care about it being humane
after all when they killed they were certianly not being humane
and they should have much shorter stays like 1 year of appeal
then the sentence is carried out

AMEN to Jewels!!
I agree with you - they should be put to death exactly how they killed their victims!
Better yet, I think they should let the victim's family members come up with ingenious ways to execute them.

hang em high, Personaly I like a Chuck Norris Roundhouse kick as a means of execution, but seriously bring back hangings and the gas chamber (that one causes a lot of pain)
