Wow. What a great question. It's a toss up for me ... they're both awesome :) I'll be curious to read other peoples answers.

This is kind of like asking if Luis Bunuel is better than Clint Eastwood. Each band had very different things they were trying to do and both did a great job of achieving that. For fun, emotionally nuanced rock and roll, the 'Mats take the cake. The Pixies were angular, avant garde, noisy and oblique. It really depends on what your cup of tea is.

As far as solo work goes, Westerberg beats out Black every time. I am very unimpressed with pretty much everything Black has done since the Pixies - in fact it may be that Kim Deal was the real talent in the band! Paul has put out many excellent solo albums - some patchy ones, too, but he's always out there pitching.

Possible equation (food for thought): Pixies + 'Mats = Nirvana?

Paul Westerberg too pop-y. LOVE THE PIXIES, LOVE FRANK BLACK, more edgy, better lyrics, cool chick on bass, and cool band formed by cool chick on bass . What's Paul got?
