Money is basically a symbol of how much spending power someone can command.
Before money existed, people would have to trade what they had for the things they needed (such as trading fabric for milk, or tools for food, or whatever).
But this bartering system was unwieldy. For example, what if you wanted eggs from someone, but they wanted yarn, and all you had venison? You would have to go find someone with yarn, who wanted your venison, trade with them for their yarn, and then trade THAT to the original person for eggs. (What a mess, and what a load of work just for some eggs!)
Money simplified things tremendously. Everyone agreed that the metal coins being used would represent someone's buying power, and items were assigned values based on their desirability and rarity.
Now I could trade the first guy a few coins for his eggs, and he could go trade those coins in turn to the guy with yarn. (Much easier for everyone concerned.)
Money also would not spoil (as food did) and was much more portable than the items it could represent in the transaction.
You ask about doing away with money altogether? Well, there are a number of problems with that.
One is that human nature is always tempted to amass power, comfort, gratification, and pleasure at someone else's expense, if it's easy to do so. So let's say someone gives me food. I'm not obligated to pay anything for it. Who says I will ever produce anything that the other guy needs to live? Meanwhile he's providing me with stuff he had to work for, with no certainty that I'll take care of him.
This is why socialism and communism failed. A few people benefited; the average guy was not happy, nor did he feel his efforts changed his lot in life.
Money also helps the creation of new tech. Let's say I want a stereo. Well, I need metal and plastic and rubber to make one, plus a big factory with lots of electricity (among many other things!)
Who's going to be able to dig up and smelt the metal, make the plastic, build and run the power plant, all of which has to happen before I can make the stereo system? How am I even going to learn how to make the stereo system? (Someone else has to teach me.) Meanwhile, do I have anything to give them in return?
Chances are, the stereo system will never get made. Anything complicated or involving LOTS of people will probably not get done, if it is based on the initiative of people working very hard for rewards that come only far in the future. The resources just are not there.
Generally, tribal systems without money/currency are at a very basic level of technology and live directly off the land, with all the problems that might entail.
Money, while corruptable as a source of social power, actually regulates (in a positive way) the way we share among each other. Perhaps it's not the best, most altruistic system; but it is what enables our society to do what it does and develop the technology and level of comfort that we currently experience.
The current system, accompanied by people who give freely of their money to help the unfortunate, is probably one of the best systems that could realistically be developed.

I have always wished for a world without money and I believe that everyone would be so much more equal if rules against biases towards others would pass, so that everyone would be treated fairly. I mean laws would have to be written extensively about this and it would have to be prepared for years ahead to get everyone ready for the change. Plus citizens should have the Right to vote on the laws. That would only be fair to let them have a say. The congressional committee would probably be in turmoil for awhile and it would take at least 6-10 years to implement at least, even if it was proposed today. This would not be easy, because some people, rich or not, would be worried about losing their freedom and the value of their jobs and health care. Not everyone would continue to do things/jobs out of the kindness of their heart, unless they were intelligent enough to see that everyone would receive equal benefits. The only people who should not receive those new benefits, would be the criminals, as they have limited rights anyway. So, I hope to see this occur in my life time, but it probably won't. We have a very prideful and selfish society, more so than one willing to make a change and venture into the unknown.
Good question, I agree completely, and thanks for asking.

The world would be a better place indeed. Money really only has as much value as "people" more specifically "powerful people" put on it. The only reason that money even came about was that long ago rulers wanted to show how powerful they were. They used to have silks, flocks of animals even women as symbols of power and prosperity. The only problem with this is when these rich men traveled they could not take all these things with them. They tried, but it was a big pain!. So then they came out with blocks of gold; however this was too heavy to tote around so they turned the blocks into coins. This was not good enough so then we started using notes (paper). Wealthy men would put there gold into banks and the banks would give them a promissory note stating how much money he had. Then the notes turned into dollar bills and now here we have money.
Back in the day people used to trade goods and services for goods and services, but when notes came on the scene merchants wanted to be seen as being just as powerful as the rulers they did business with so they began to trade their goods for money. This trend caught on quickly and so now here today every one wants those notes! (dollar bills!) because it is a symbol of power and we can get whatever we want with it.
Honestly there is really no need for money except to show status and provide a nuetral form of currency.
With all of the knowledge that we have today we could form a system that worked off of providing needs on a mass basis with out having to use money or trade. For instance, people should be required to learn useful skills for the greater good of society. People would be happy knowing that their work is providing a positive impact for the community. Every one could participate and people would actually be able to work less hours and be under less stress. People would also be more likely to choose to become well versed in certain fields of study because they like it rather than because it pays more. Like I said, the world would be a much better place. We should use our powers for good, not evil. Time to stop thinking about ourselves or what's in it for us all the time. There is a time and a place for that, but, humanity can certainly do without money as an incentive

There was a time a few hundred years ago when money was unknown. No you couldn't just ask for something, that would be impracticle. For instance, if you were an excellent dress maker. All the ladies of the community would come over and ask for a dress. If you just gave them away, but you needed food and there was no one who had any near you , what did you get for all of your work ?
What they did was called barter. Trade one thing for another. It worked for hundreds of years, but was an awfully awkward system.

Well the Communist Russia had an idea similiar to this except they were going to employ credit cards but there would be a limitation to items you could get. And considering money is the route of all evil are world would be much much different.

It would be total anarchy because no one would be able to afford everything else. Money is a neutral currency. If I went to some farmer and said "Hey I want to buy some corn" and he said "What do you got?" and I said "I got some wheat" and he says back "I don't need that." I wouldn't get my corn. With money you can take that and buy something else with it. People would not just give items away for free to you, and you would need something valuable to trade in return for the item/service you are receiving. Money is a necessary evil.

centuries ago, people were living their life without money, u can imagin how beautiful that really was, but they were using something instead of money which was trading. in my opinion money is just easier than trading bec. in trading, u should have something like a farm, a place for animals..etc.
in the end money and trading are so much alike, a very little differences are bet. them
