Absolutely not. Our health care system is a mess, it's true, but I think the best way to fix it is with less government intervention, not more. You see, as with everything else, you tend to get all the best and most expensive stuff you can when someone else is paying the bill. Well, if the government is paying the bill, that really means the taxpayers. It's not fair for healthy people to have their tax burden substantially raised because some others can't or won't take care of themselves. Which leads to a related point: If you're paying your own bill, you're more likely to take good care of yourself, so you don't end up paying more than you absolutely have to.

Hmmm, all or nothing.

I want universal health care, but realistically, if it took 80% of our gross income to do it, we could not live on the 20% left over, so I would have to say no. However, that's assuming you just picked that number out of a hat.

If you are using figures supplied by those who are against health care for everyone, I would have to say those numbers are skewed. There isn't a country in the world with socialized medicine (that I am aware of) where 80% of income goes to health care. Some of the highest taxes are paid in Scandinavian countries which have a lot of social programs, not just universal health care. Even there, those in the highest income brackets pay approximately 40-45% in taxes, and those in lower income brackets pay less.

But in the all or nothing scenario you have posited, if it's 80% for everyone, regardless of income, then it isn't doable.

Later:

80%?? Where are you getting your figures, please?

Where did you get the 80% figure, yes I am a victim of a runaway health care system, inspired by insurance company's and if you were in my shoes you would want a more controlled environment also. If you just look to the north they have a system in place and they do not spend 80% of their income on to the government, while they do ***** about the system, if ask would they trade it for ours you get many answers of HELL NO. and none that say yes. I have ask, I was traveling to Canada almost weekly for awhile and it is a good system. This country with all its riches should be taking care of its people.

It may take a lot of money out of your check, but you can not see how much it saves. For the percent you give to health care, helps you to stay healthy and not miss work. This also protects the people who can work and other cases. There is no way it is 80%, the system has worked in canada, why not the U.S?. One Nation for all or the few?

No. Several European antions are dealing with this fiasco already. Even France, who is considered the "top" of the universal health care issue, had 50,000 people die because of a heat wave.

The amount of taxation would be staggering. It would DESTROY lower to middle income families, and the wealthy would feel it too. I read that the tax rate in Europe runs as high as 50%-60% of your yearly income. Ouch! Its hard enough having 30% taken out for lazy people on welfare...

Whenever a government gets involved in something like this they do nothing but screw it up...

Where are you getting this figure?

Massachusetts, the only US state with universal health care, charges $295/person annually. This is hardly 80% of my salary.

However, I'd rather my tax dollars go to Americans and not a war in a foreign land.

Only if I get the same health care that all the members of Congress etc. get at the rates they pay. I'd also like to have their retirement package.
But other than that, No. I don't want the government handling anything for me. Ask yourself- would I like to go to a VA hospital? If you know anything about them, the answer will be NO.

Why bother with universal health care? Just cancel your health
insurance and do what the mojados do, just show up at the emergency room and let them bill the government for services performed.
