Words only have power when we give it to them. But, this word has a violent and horrible history. Some words are best left to wither and die, this one is in definte need of annihilation.

As for the other parts to your question, you seem hell bent to prove some point. It might be more productive if you were to simply say what you really want instead of talking around it.

It is rather obvious you have issues that cannot be resolved in Yahoo Answers.

Honey, I am black, and please dont tell me you've never said anything or even told jokes about the opposite race. A N***** is just what it is. An ignorant person. You can only take offense if thats what u are. I know many black, white, and hispanic n****** if you really wanna know the truth. Unfortunately, many people, even those that arent openly racist have bits and pieces af racism and stereotypes hidden within, and we all just need to come together, and love all people. I feel that those of us as a black people who call each other n****** and then get mad at others are stupid anyway. They just want excuses to stay mad at white people. Don't get me wrong, I don't think its right and dont tolerate disrespect, but you can only be offended if you accept that labeling. I live in a town where the older generation of white people still tries to address me as girl. I respectfully tell them to get with the times and get over it!!!! Hatred is 4 LOSERS!!!

Saying that word just makes you look even more uneducated. I think the same thing when I here a white country boy talking like he just crawled out of the barn or when Black people using the word cuz or the n word. I am one of four white people that work at my company and none of the black or Hispanic talk with slang. All of them talk professionally, even the eight dollar an hour works talk with intelligence. Its just stupid and makes you look stupid in return.

well i cant speak for all white men, but i don't hang out with any racist bastards, my wife is half black ( shes part native new zealander) and i wont stand for any of that crap. as for why its ok for black people to say the n word, i don't know why there can be a double standard and still be a good thing. i know most of my black friends say its because there is no racial slur meant when a black person says it, but if a white person hears it coming from anyone, no matter the race, its offensive! i would think it only leads to a continuation of the racial barriers.

Back when I used to live in a little redneck town in Texas practically everyone used the n-word (not in a good way). Going back for visits I have recently noticed how things haven't changed at all.

Personally, I have no desire to use the n-word, nor does anyone I hang out with. I think the word is derogatory even when it is used by black people.

I am white, however I hang out with a very diverse group of people and it is rare that I am ever only with white people. None of us use the N word, ever. Racial jokes are said occasionally, however they are in good humor and nobody is ever offended. The jokes are mostly us bucking at societal expectations of certain racial groups. We look around at each other and know that most of the world is missing out b/c of their narrow minds. My group of friends include white, Mexican, Nicaraguan,
Chilean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, African, and African-American people and we couldn't imagine a better group of friends.

People that get mad about not being able to use that word are total idiots.

I work at a beauty supply (don't let the avatar fool you, that's just for show) in downtown Long Beach, and sometimes at Compton. I hear it all the time. Once it surprised me because this one woman was in there, older, maybe in her mid 50's. She was very proper and nice and quiet. Then this other lady walked in and was completely opposite. It was n*gger this and n*gger that, and the first lady turned to me and said "I just HATE that word" So you see, it's not just white people. And besides, it's not white people who can't say it, it's black people who can't take it.

I am a older generation person, I have heard the younger kids say the words, but it doesn't sound right coming out of their mouth, heck i have noticed alot of whites, repeating the slang talk of people of color.
This may be wrong to say, have anyone noticed how the whites want the curly hair, and the people of color want the straight hair?
At least we are trying to get along, by exchanging looks, dress style, speech.

No, I don't say it. We get mad that African-American's can say it without being called a biggot because its a double standard. You don't hear all us white people walking around calling eachother Honkies. Anyways. I just don't like the word in general and I think that if you don't want other people saying it, then you shouldn't say it either. (and I mean that with any word.)

No. We never say things like that. It is disgusting to me when black people think they have the right to mandate what we do, such as using language like that, and they think that they can do it all they want. It's infurtiating really, added to the fact that black people use slavery as the excuse for all of their woes. I think it's sick that something that happened so long ago is still causing us to be castigated for something we didn't do. You can complain all you want, but it doesn't make me see you as anything special. People are equal. You have the same rights as me, and I'm sorry that that isn't good enough for you.
