If you buy one from a junkyard, you should rebuild it before using it. It would be cheaper to rebuild the current one. But it would be safest to buy a new or rebuilt unit; brakes are not something to play around with.

I would get a master cylinder rebuild kit from your local auto supply store before buying a whole different master cylinder. But if you want to buy a different one,I would buy it new to be sure that I would not have to replace it again in a short period of time afterwards, and to be sure it is safe to use.

alot of junk yards will not sell any brake equipment, others will..its ok to buy one from a junkyard but just check and make sure there is absolutly no fluid seeping into the metal before you buy it.
watch for dark fluid

As with any part purchased from the salvage yard, the more info you can find out about it, the better. If your vehicle needed one at 90,000 miles, you may not want to get one from a vehicle with 320,000 miles, but if you know it was from a low mileage wreck and had not sat on the yard for years...........................nuf sed

They rarely fail so a used one should be fine. Try to get one from a car that hasn't been sitting long. You can also get rebuilt ones from chain parts stores, or get the parts and rebuild it yourself.

Yes, specially if it is for storage of volatile substances----the only time I would buy a used is if there is a lab certification from an independent lab regarding its worthiness
