"white knuckle" is a term used, when someone, might be in a panic situation, such as grabbing the steering wheel, real hard, causing your knuckles to go white (sometimes) It's when you have to make a quick decision. Thats why its called white knuckle..I hope I explained it good enough..

it refers to toughing out a scary situation, it's an allusion to gripping a hand-hold (like in a roller-coaster) or steering wheel (drving your car in hazardous weather conditions) so tightly that the blood leaves your knuckes, hence white knuckles
