32 teams qualify for the World Cup, based upon the number of guaranteed slots for each sectional, the home country, and at-large qualifiers. These teams are then seeded into eight groups of four teams each for group play. In group play, each team plays the other three teams in its group, with three points awarded for a win, one point for a tie. The top two teams from each group advance to the elimination round, with head-to-head and goal differential used as tiebreakers as needed. To begin the elimination round, each group winner plays a group second-place team, and the elimination bracket is set at this time.

ok each team plays a certain amount of games. if u win u get 3 points, tie u get 1 and loose 0. the teams with the most points move to the next round. then its a single ellimination.
