that suns, and other stars, are really cubes of gas moving so fast that they appear to be spherical. It sounds insane to me, but is this true? It was on a looney toon assed "aliens are going to come destroy us all website".

No.

First, the gas particles could not possibly move fast enough to overcome the immense gravitational pull of a body like the sun; second, the Second Law of Thermodynamics implies that objects occupy the lowest states of energy possible; a giant cube of gas would have an unimaginably higher potential energy than a sphere and would certainly change to a lower energy state. Third, gas particles would have no way to "coordinate" with each other to be able to form anything close to a cube in the first place--we're talking about unfathomable numbers of particles, and there's no way they could spontaneously move in the same direction at the same time or form the shape of a cube. Plus, there aren't any magnetic fields with cube-shaped force lines. Fourth, the sun is gigantic, and the torque required to rotate it fast enough to create an optical illusion would probably amount to the total kinetic energy in a couple of large solar systems. Fifth, even if stars were cubes, they wouldn't look like spheres even if they were rotating at the speed of light--the tangential force would push the mass out to all sides and it would look more like a spiral galaxy, but much smaller. Sixth, external features like sunspots rotate at the speed at which we predict the sun as a whole rotates; this would not be observed if it were rotating very quickly. I hope these have been sound, helpful arguments. It was very good of you to question the information you heard, and remember that scientific knowledge can often get twisted the most in the hands of ignorant or deceptful people.

No. The sphere is the shape that has the smallest surface area for a given volume, and is thus naturally one of the most efficient shapes.

The sun rotates on an axis, but not so rapidly that it would appear spherical.

Think of it this way -- take a cubical wooden block and put it on a spindle. How would you rotate it about a single axis in such a manner as to make it appear spherical? You can't, no matter how rapidly you rotate it. You could make it look like a square, or a diamond, or perhaps even a figure-eightish kind of shape, but in no way can you rotate a square to make it spherical.

Just because it's on a website, it doesn't make it true. That is why people always have to be cautions of information from the internet.

When you question information, you need to check their sources. A website that has information and lists credible sources is a lot more believable than "a looney toon assed 'aliens are going to come destroy us all website."

No. the reason they are spherical is because gravities forces are spread out equally. The pressure from within a star equalize with the force of gravity from its center. Therefore, the boundry of the star will be equal distance or very close to it, from the center. Making it into a sphere or close to one.

that is totally fake! Stars are spheres, because they spin in a spherical motion, creating a globe like shape. They are not cubes, and if they stopped spinning, they would combust or just dissaperate
