While it is true that any program designed to help a certain minority could be classified as 'racist' in the sense you describe, the fact is: This is not a color-blind world yet. If it were, such programs would be not only moot, but would actually call attention to traits that people would otherwise overlook. Some of us are there; but not all. So, I believe there still is a place for at least some of these programs (though I'm not prepared to get into a discussion of specifics at this time.)
More interesting to me is that in many ways, there seems to be more pressure to remain 'segregated' coming from within minority communities themselves. For instance, there is currently a question on this site by an apparently-darker-skinned girl asking white boys about their experience dating black girls, and someone (who called her 'Sista') advised her to 'stay black.'

White people have it worse? Did you really say that? Where have you been? Do you even know why those things you seem to hate so much exist in the first place? The only thing minorities have to themselves is that they are minorities. Minorities were once property, not considered people, and had no rights. Even after the abolition of slavery, it was virtually impossible for anyone other than a white person to get anywhere or achieve anything. The only jobs minorities were basically allowed to have were janitorial, maids/housekeepers, field hands, etc. Pretty much what they were as slaves. Don't even get me started on the wages. Honestly if you look around, minorities still aren't considered equal with their white counterparts and don't get more than whites. Racism is here to stay just like war. It has gotten better but it will never be 100% and for you to even entertain the thought is wishful thinking. Remember there were similarities with women also. Women had no rights and couldn't vote.

You don't want any of this "racism" crap, yet your question is full of it...
The reason affirmative action programs and court-ordered hiring quotas exist in some places is simply because without them many minorities would have NO chance at all of getting into certain schools or certain jobs. It has nothing to do with their qualifications, and everything to do with the color of their skin. Racism in many parts of the country has been so pervasive for so long that even if a person that was part of some minorities was MORE qualified than any of the white candidates they would not get a position simply because of racism.
The goal behind those programs is to remove race from the process, not to add more racial issues. Until you've walked a mile in their shoes, you simply can't understand how bad the racism is in many places. How does mandating a minimum number of minority hires or admissions give that minority "more than us?" You're still the majority, pal. And you're also a racist, as your statements ("admit I am better than you" "if you want to be treated equal that is fine", as if you're the one that can or can't grant them the right to be equal).
Wake up, take a look in the mirror, and learn to recognize your own racism.

I hear you but first I think we need to examine why these programs were put into place. I cant realy speak for minorities as a whole but I can honestly tell you that had it not been for these social programs it wouldve been very difficult for crtain groups to even be considered for a job. And lets not fool ourselves by thinking this type of biggotry doesnt still exist today. And its not just limited to jobs think about housing and how many looks some people get just walking through a certain area let alone live there. Tell you what Ill trade you all the social programs in place and you can have all the police brutality, profiling, hardships finding a place to live in a decent area, the presumption of guilt before innocence, being watched and followed around in stores etc.etc.etc...

I take it from your question that you are caucasian, and if so I must say that judging by your horrendous grammar and spelling skills, you have not taken full advantage of the opportunities given to your race. But to answer your question, I have to say that I dont believe in handouts, yet I also dont believe that there is a level playing field when it comes to economic and social opportunity. Just look at the history of CEO's and Presidents, and you can see that only an extremely small percentage of them are of a minority race. Thats not to say minorities are not able to reach such levels, but rather that those positions are influenced by those who already hold them. For you to say that everyone needs to be treated equal, you are in fact saying that there should be no racism to minorities or towards whites. But you very well know that racism does exist, and until it no longer does, this "handouts" as you call them, will have to exist. Think about the word minority, which you yourself use. Minority does not mean less in numbers, but less power. So when you say minority, you are in fact implying that these individuals lack power. Take women for example. There are more women then men, yet they are minorities. Not because there are less of them, but because they lack power. If hispanics or blacks ruled the business world, then they would also have to provide some regulatory methods to ensure whites are not discriminated against.

You could not have said it any better! Don't cry equality when you have the upper hand. There are means out there that you can make yourself as equal as the next guy. By putting emphasis on past issues that you had no part of you are segregating yourself. I look at it like everyone has the same opportunities, it's what you do with those opportunities that set you apart from everyone else.
I cannot stand to hear people complain about something that happened 50-100 years ago. Something none of us had anything to do with but we end up owing "them" for that piece of history. My question is this...."What part did "they" play"? Why do I have to cater to you for something I know nothing about? It's ridiculous!

All races of people are equal as far as I am concerned. Granted, the black people have been made slaves, but so were Jewish, and the Irish too. Many people who are Jewish have made their fortunes by working hard. Many black people have overcome their slavery days with hard work. Just look at Bill Cosby. He made it because he is funny. He went to college because he wanted to do it. He has a doctorate degree in education. Many people of all races have made it in life because they kept pushing themselves to be all they could be.
I believe that all people should be equal no matter what the shade of their skin might be. Even the Bible teaches us that in Acts 10 where it says that a person of any nation who serves God is acceptable to Him. I don't think that just because you are a black person, a native American, white, or any race, you should be given special privileges. Nobody is any better than anybody else. We are all members of the human race.

To Mr Well Traveled, when he says "admit I am better than you" I believe he is trying to make the point that any law that requires someone to hire a minority regardless of thier qualifications implies that the minority can't possibly be qualified, therefore the government must mandate that they be hired whether qualified or not. The poster does not come across as racist here. Simply someone who is apposed to government mandated favoritism to one group over another.
You should not assume that everyone apposed to your point of view is an evil racist. You should look for valid points in thier argument before name calling.

I agree 100%. Second hand people (people who don't have the right skills) make a second hand nation.
Yes, some people may have less opportunities to study or get aid, but the governemnt should provide the aid, and not make reservations in schools or jobs. That will only bring down the standards everywhere.

I think that everyone should be treated equal. I think anyone who bitches about all the stuff they DONT get, should be shipped off, and all the people around the world, who really are treated unfairly, and who really dont have anything, should be brought here. They would actually appreciate what they get.
