I would heartily recommend Croatia! I have just returned from 10 days there and am planning to return in September because it was so wonderful. If you want further info e-mail me!

croatia- affordable by your standards even cheap, try the continental part (Zagreb, Zagorje- for castles and village tourism and Varaždin-there is a great festival there in october) and the cost will be nice at that time too, but not very warm. i would also recommend Ohrid lake in Macedonia-breathtakingly beautiful!

you sound British..my father's father, my paternal grand-dad was from Manchester-yea Manchester United...from England you might try Portugal, yrs ago it was very economical for tourists, or Italy, because October is winter there and off season, i believe...My wife said Greece is not very expensive, compared to other European destinations...Israel might be inexpensive, because of the intifada stuff going on, and has many historical biblical sights...hope you have a good holiday...cheerio...
