The lowest AL leading batting average was Yastremski, at .301 in 1968. Second lowest was Elmer Flick, with .308 in 1905.

Yaz hit .301 and the next year the rules were changed. That was the same year that Bob Gibson had the 1.12 ERA and still lost 9 games. The next year the mound was lowered and that boosted up runs and averages.
