Ok, so I bought a nice new pair of Nike's and the cat decided to make territory or something....I can't believe the stink in my shoes. Is it ok to put Nike running shoes in the washer or will that ruin them? Any other ideas?

I frequently machine wash my Nikes and Adidas and have no problems. To get rid of the cat pee sell, the following steps should do it for you:
1 Take the laces out of the shoes and throw away. If the insoles come out easy, take them out and put them, along with the shoes into a paper or plastic bag.
2. Spray the shoes down with an odor neutralizng spray or solution. Febreeze is a good brand. There are also several other brands including some that are specifically targeted to remove urine smells. These sparys can be found in the cleaning and/or laundry aisle of your store. Pet stores also have several types of these sprays.
3. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 cup of kitty litter. The regular, cheap litter works great, and fill up each shoe with the litter/soda mixture and cover the insoles with it too.
4. Close the bag and allow to sit overnight.
5. After sitting, throw away the litter and put the insoles and the shoes into the washer. Add 3/4 cup laundry soap (Tide with Febreeze is good for this) and 3/4 baking soda or a scoop of Oxyclean. Wash the shoes on the small cycle with warm water and if possible, cold water to rinse.
6. When done washing, check to see if the shoes have odor still or not. If they are acceptable, allow the shoes to air dry. Putting them in a warm or hot dryer can make them shrink.

Take a sock and fill it up with litter and tie a knot in the opening to seal the litter in. When not wearing the shoes, put the sock inside the shoes and the litter will absorb any odors there may be. You can reuse your litter sock for a very long time.

I know these directions seemed really long, but this hardly takes time and should do the trick for you.
Have a great day !

If canvas tennis shoes....1/2 cup of white vinegar in your washing machine along with your laundry soap.

If the are non washable...leather or vinyl...then mix mix 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water in a spray bottle and spray the shoes with that....let it sit for a few hours and then wipe off with clean cloth and leather shoe cleaner.

White vinegar will normally take the smell of cat pee out of anything! I don't think I would try washing Nikes in a washing machine though!

Other suggestion...make the cat an outside pet!

There is a little bottle you can buy called "super cd" Believe me it will take the smell of cat pee out of your tennis shoes and anything else. The bottle reads three drops of this stuff will kill the smell of skunk. I never had a chance to test that claim...Thank God ! Good Luck...

You need to neutralise the urine odour to remove the smell. To do this use neat white vinegar and rub liberally inside the boot. Then allow to dry in the sunlight. If the smell has not gone repeat this process. This is also good for carpets where cat or dog has peed otherwise they will keep going back to the same spot as they are attracted to the smell.

washing isn't going to help. Cat urine is murder to get rid of. I can only suggest you go to a local pet store and look for a spray that is designed to break down the enzymes in the urine. Spray them heavily and then toss in the washer. Hopefully it'll work for you.

I'll tell you what worked perfectly for me. My dipsh*t cat suddenly took it upon herself after years to whizz on my couch. The solution? Kitty has now spent the past 2 years residing comfortably in the garage. Oh sure...it's cold in the winter but there's no wind chill, fresh water and food every day, clean cat box and hell.....she's got a fur coat to stay warm. The first year she howled to come back into the nice warm house. Well...tough bananas kitty.
Never again!

The washer might ruin them. I would just buy a new pair and keep them out the reach of the cat.

Go jogging--the sweat will overwhelm the urine. Or white vinegar in a spray bottle.

Buy more shoes and large Ziploc baggies to store them in.
