a sense of humor is a great thing to have. I joke about almost everything too, but there is a difference between having fun and being flat out disgusting or offensive.

Oh God YES! I love to laugh and love who makes me laugh but people who don't know when to shut the hell up, listen and handle a serious discussion every now and then are way too annoying! I can't seem to watch an interview with Robin Williams - he is always going over the top, talking over the interviewer, making stupid sounds and noises and voices and faces and aaaaaaaaarrrrghhhhhhh!!!! He makes me want to pull my hair out. Be sensitive and attentive, sometimes people just want to be heard and want your opinion - your honest opinion- on something. Trying to make people laugh when they want serious conversation is nice of you, but may not be the most sensitive thing to do. Pick the right moments, you'll be even more loved and appreciated than I'm sure you are right now.

Only when it's a joke that directly affects a listener.... making a joke when someone has just been bereaved etc.

Apart from that anything goes... Brits are well known for laughing at danger/death (and anything sick...!)

There is definitely bad times to crack a joke. However, personally I always love a good joke!

If your best friend says: "I tried to commit suicide last night," and bursts into tears - don't make a joke... Other than that I think joking is OK.

I agree with lassy. You must know your audience though. Everyone I presume even you, has certain things you hold "sacred," whether literally or figuratively. As long as you respect those boundaries, jest away!
