Old people tend to tip poorly. They remember the days when a quarter was worth something. Rich people tend to be stingy too. A lot of people just don't realize that waiters and waitresses rely on those tips to make a living. The restaurant business is the one job in which they can get away with paying up to half of minimum wage. Without the tips, the waiters/waitresses cannot make a living. The wages barely cover insurance and taxes. As long as they give you good service (not rude or ignoring you), you should always pay 20% of the total bill (before all discounts) in tip. Even if you get a discount, the poor girl/guy had to work just as hard for you. And don't sit there chatting forever after you are done. You are robbing that girl/guy of another tip. Sorry, it's a touchy subject.

It's hard not to pick a particular "group" of people. I've worked the business for over 10 years now and realize that old people, teenagers & sad to say but very true from what I've realized everywhere I've been...african americans. I don't think I'm racist either, people are people wherever you go. This is just what I've noticed from working in the business for what seems like forever. Anyhow...I think what it boils down to is the heart. If you are stingy, tight, or just an overall miserable person, you don't tend to give what you ought to, suppose we've all been there before at one time or another. It's custom to tip your server anywhere from 10-20 percent or more depending on the type of service you receive from them, not on the fact that you've had a bad day or life...or feel for some reason that the world owes you ... and decide to take it out on somebody else (your server). Hopefully if you're a teen and you decide to splurge and go to Red Lobster instead of Mcdonalds for once, make sure you have enough to tip your server. What goes around comes around!

i understand the question and i work in the food industry every night or day when we all get off work we have a chat session about this... i would have to say that more than 50% of black people don't tip very well i don't know if they still think everyone is out to get us or something but bad tippers they are ...and the older generation do think they are tipping well because in their days a dollar went a long way... then you have just the cheap..I'm going to sit on my wallet type they think their tipping well but hahaha little do they know..they are as cheep as they come.. money didn't buy their happiness. get your noses down out of the clouds..not a raciest ? or answer. just the truth..

like race wise? black people...sometimes they just leave the change less...than $2 and sometimes nothing!!...and cops are bad too...forget the 50% off their meal...i'm glad we don't do that...old people i never expect anything big because they probably don't have a lot...i once served this lady who was on Days of Our Lives...pretty good tipper for only 3 people and the bill was less than $50

worst tippers are blacks, anyone from Park City KS. MAN they tip bad. Tipping is really becoming obsolete, I think one day it will have to be done away with. products are becoming to expensive to pay 10 to 20 percent on. I always tip 15% but when I used to go to the bars it was har to give 20.00 on a 100.00 ticket.

In some countries, namely Iceland, you are not expected to tip at all so the Icelandic people have difficulty grasping the concept when they go abroad.
