You pay 50¢ per digit. Therefore 8000 costs $2.00.

You made a mistake in the statement though. You are not conjugating properly. it should be 15 costS and 100 costS, since they are singular items (as a group), not multiple :)

Like you said, one way to avoid the conjugation issues is to use the past, but you can also use this way:

I bought 1 for 50¢, 15 for $1.00, and 100 for $1.50. How much did I pay for 8000?
