Not sure if you're asking for pet peeves or why the stupid folded things.

The stupid folded things are an anti counterfit thing... having one or more perforated edges makes it harder to copy... or at least so you can't just print it out of your laser printer at home.

Pet peeve... You go to the DMV to take care of business at lunch right (the only time you can leave the office during the day for any amount of time). Everyone else shows up at the DMV at the same time for the same reason. But... promptly at noon, out of the 5 tellers that are on duty... 4 of them go to lunch as well!

It's quicker processing for them and more secure for you. No one can open it and put it back together whereas they could open an envelope and glue it shut, and you'd probably never know.

Also, a lot of them have a sort of carbon paper inside so they just print the check through the envelope (blank on the outside, but printed inside). This saves a lot of time and money for them.
