duane was an awesome player, and if you liked that, you should check out eric clapton touring this year with derek trucks. i bet thats gonna be killer.
and hendrix was the man, nobody before him played like that. he just came out of nowhere and took things to the next level, which didnt happen again until van halen showed up, and hasnt happened since.
but, my personal favorite is Randy Rhoads. the guy could just do anything, and was such a dedicated musician. i love the power of all of his stuff, its just so forceful and atmospheric. and at the end, he was going to walk away from all of it so he could get a degree in classical music instruction. he was unreal.

So many different factors- for technical skill I'd give Stevie Vie- for feeling I'd give Stevie Ray Vaughn- for inventiveness Jimi Hendrix- some say that the live guitar solo in Crossroads as performed by Eric Clapton is the best guitar solo in history. Duane Allman was the slide guitarist in Layla, by the way. Too many factors to nail down any one person.

Since you mention a rock guitarist, my suggestions will be in the nature of checking out other genres. I have a current love for Ottmar Liebert (Spanish jazz) and an Australian guy named Tommy Emmanuel. The can do anything from Jimmy Hendrix to Elvis and Chet Atkins; "space music" to classical. He is so great to listen to live - I bought a CD collection from Australia, which doesn't do him justice.
For pure love of acoustic guitar, also check out my old pals Chet Atkins, Mason Williams, Doc Watson, Norman Blake. You might also look at classical greats - you'll be surprised how much you like it. Look for Concerto de Aranjuez.

u can't really compare different types of guitar players with others if the music is completely different. u'd have to say who is the best 'blues' guitarist or 'metal' guitarist, etc... cuz it's TOTALLY different depending on the type of music.
best metal guitarist would be DIMEBAG DARRYL ABBOTT †
best blues/rock guitarist would be a hard choice between Stevie Ray Vaughn †, Joe Satriani or Jimi Hendrix †
