Mike is correct. Walt Disney made Plane Crazy with Mickey and Minnie. The cartoon was inspired by the popularity of Charles Lindbergh, However, there was nothing really special about the cartoon. It was basically Oswald the Rabbit, with a mouse instead of a rabbit and Disney could not find a distributor. He realized he needed something to make his cartoons different.
The Jazz Singer with Al Jolson had recently come out and was the first sound movie. This inspired Walt. He took the new technology and created a second Mickey cartoon, Steamboat Willie and this time made it with sound. It was a huge success. He then went back and added sound to Plane Crazy and then released it. The rest as they say is history.
Extra Bonus Trivia - Walt Disney himself did the falsetto voice of Mickey Mouse in those early cartoons.
