I mean really...I can't comprehend how an individual doesn't know how to swim. I personally don't remember learning how to swim b/c I've been swimming my whole life. If you put a baby in water it will instinctivaly start swimming. How are some adults not skilled in the art of swimming. (I'll even accept doggy paddling)

I don't get it either! My mom can't swim and it seriously irriates me. As far as I know, she hasn't had any life-altering experience in the water that makes her afraid of it, she just says that she will just sink! I just don't get it!

You may have been swimming as a toddler, but for myself, I didn't even get into a pool until I was 8. Then my swim instructor pushed me under the water and held me there for what felt like a minute (which I'm sure wasn't). It left a bad impression and I've rarely gotten in a pool since. I can doggy paddle, and tread water, but swimming with my face in the water freaks me out because of that incident.
My point is that sometimes fear of water is a factor into why someone doesn't know how to swim.

Well I don't know how to swim. When I was growing up my parents were farmers so during the summer we never went into town to swim. Up until just a few years ago I finally went to the swimming pool but I would just wade in the pool. Its not that I am afraid of the water, I'm just afraid of drowning...(ha ha) My aunt has a pool and I go there and try to teach myself once in a while, but I still have that fear. My girlfriend tells me that she will teach me but I think that because I have gone so long without learning that I may not ever get over my fear.

people who dont know how to swim are just people who r scared of drowning, they think that moving their arms will keep them from drowning...but they dont know that if they start moving their leg, they will be able to swim....they dont want to take chances
