Your budget will define the answer.

Logitech Z-5500's are an excellent buy right now, but still may be more expensive than most people want to spend. In the same price category, Klipsch ProMedia Ultra's are some of my favorites. Better for music, if you have a tuned ear for sound quality.

Of course there are cheaper and also more expensive/better speakers out there, but those get my vote for good sound at a justifyable price.

I had the same concern and still want new speakers, then i discovered DFX which is a sound enhancment program available at www.dfx.com.Now you only get alittle for free however, this program will kik the sound up alot.I then discovered the full version of DFX on ebay for 20bucks instead of 50 which is the cost of the program online. the point is this download the free version and u wil notice immediate change in sound for the good GET the full version and you will most likley not need new speakers at all... Get a sound card with RCA output
Get a small mixing board with RCA inputs
Get music speakers (The kind musicians use for shows)
Run the sound card to the mixing board, and run the mixing board to the speakers.

Awesome sound quality for only a few hundred dollars!

I picked these Altec Lansings.. and I love them...
here's a blurb.. and the whole set only cost fifty bucks

Whether you're listening to music, playing games or watching movies, the Altec Lansing VS2221 system brings entertainment to life. Its unique SFX Technology widens the stereo image for a bigger sound at the touch of a button. Plus, the VS2221's flat panel design with sophisticated metallic feel makes it the ideal companion to your flat panel monitor.

In 2.1 segment Altec Lansing MX-5021 are the best one, after it Logitech X-230 and and Logitech Z-2300 are too good you may choose them too.
If you have a good sound card i.e.creative Audigy 2 ZS or Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic and enough money then Logitech Z-5500 are Best in any class.

Ummm... According to this page there is only one type of input, standard 1/8" mini jack so your choice should be simple. No digital connections or anything.
