There are 10 teams in my league. I drafted Johnson in the fifth round last year. We start 3 WR 2 RB 2 QB 1TE 1Defense and 1RB/WR slot and 1 K

I would pull the trigger...You are giving up a lot, so I may try to get the guy to give you one more player (maybe a young guy with a lot of updside). But even if he wouldn't, I'd still do it. I've been very successful in fantasy sports by packaging 2 or 3 good players for 1 great player, and trying to assemble 2 or 3 first round caliber players.

Holy crud! YES! In Johnson and Alexander you would have 2 of the top 3 projected players in the league. And Chad Johnson at WR. What are there, 3 teams in this league? How did you end up with that many good players. Anyway, yes make the deal. The hardest part is you can't know for sure pre-season what a guy will actually do regular season, but that's why we have a draft every year. Alexander/ Johnson will likely be a better pair than Alexander/Portis and WR is too inconsistent to worry about. You've got 2 good ones left. Plus don't forget, Martz isn't in St. Louis anymore. I don't know anything about the new guy (or even who is there now, how'd I miss that?), but he probably won't like to pass as much as Martz did (who does?) and they've got an up-and-coming star RB in Jackson.

While it does look like a gamble, I would go for it.

Shaun Alexander has been consistently vicious over the last two seasons, while Portis has been mediocre. Torry Holt added may be a little much. But with Fitzgerald and Chad Johnson as your WR corps, you don't seem to be suffering too much.

Ultimately, it is up to you. In my opinion, make the trade.

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes. Unless you believe in the "Madden Curse" Then No No No NO
If you have Chad Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald for your rec's to go along with LJ, you will have a great season ahead of you. If there are more than 4 teams in your fantasy league, there are some stupid managers in that league.
Curious, how many starters do you have at WR? That would be the only thing that may persuade me from that trade. See if you can get a lower lever WR from the other guy to make the trade even.

addendum: Since you have the potential to start 3 RB's with the RB/WR position, I would absolutely make that trade. With 2 stud RB's and WR's,I would spend the 1st round getting a top QB (since you start 2), another RB, another QB, then a couple of WR's. Unless Gates is available, you can sleep on TE, K, or Def's as there are always surprise players at these positions. Look for coaching changes or changes in philosophies to see what teams will have surprisingly good TE's or D's.

Yes, do this quickly! By having to of the best RB's in the league, you will dominate, as well it takes away a top 3 RB from the rest of your leaguemates. WR stats usually vary by year and some unknown or lower ranked WR's end up with good enough numbers to be your #3 WR. I view Portis as a throw-in on this deal, as most teams would not keep him (I am assuming your 4 keepers with 8 teams) - it ends up being Holt for Alexander - easy win for you!

Impossible to answer without knowing your scoring system or the rest of your roster. Also, are picks kept at a particular draft round or do you all keep 5 players and then do a regular serpentine draft.

Having said that - if I had to give an opinion I like to get the best player in a trade and that is Alexander....

Edited: Still don't know the scoring system or keeper rules but here goes ...While I don't find this to be the slam dunk that everybody else does (I am a big fan of Portis, starting 3 WRs raises their value a little). I would still probably do it. Again call it the Best player in the deal concept. This is even more pronounced if you are only allowed to keep 4 players? If yes thaen it is a great dea lfor you asyou would have had to drop one of those players anyway and you upgraded one of your keepers..

No. Shaun Alexander won't score 20+ TDs. He is no longer in a contract year and his dominating LG (Steve Hutchinson) left for the Vikings. On the other hand Portis will benefit from Al Saunders' aggressive spread offense. So the gap between Alexander and Portis will narrow considerably. In fact, it's conceivable that Portis will outscore Alexander. Therefore, keeping your existing two receivers plus Holt is a huge bonus.

Well it depends on what the rest of your team looks like, How will you be at receiver if you give up Holt. But you will have 2 of the best backs in the league and running back consistantly give you the most points and Shaun and Larry are going to be huge this year.
