I believe Jesse Livermore and WD Gann made some dosh when the markets went to slosh. The later has it's sceptics though saying he wasn't as good as they said he was. "They" means his brother.

I'm not sure that this can be known. However, I do know that Joseph Kennedy (JFK's father) was short and made a lot of money.

Jesse Lauriston Livermore was short in 1929, and was worth over $100MM after the crash
