Go to Autozone and ask them to use their code reader to see what is wrong with the car. They do this for free, and then you can decide if it's something you can fix, or if you need to take it to your mechanic.
Before I did that, though, I'd check the gas cap to make sure it's on correctly. If it isn't, it could cause the Service Engine Light to come on.

What year is your car? Check the gas cap or place it.
Go up to Autozone the can pull the code for free. You aren't under obligation to buy a part but it gives you an idea of what is wrong.
Check Engine light has to do with the emissions of your car.
You can search the code online to find out more info. Be informed. www.2carpros.com is a great one place to go to
I had the similar problem. EGR was throwing a the code. It was a simple fix. Just hand to clean out the carbon was able to do it myself and no more light

Take it somewhere to have a diagnostic check. They will be able to tell you if something is wrong or if its just the light. My car's check engine light comes on and goes off all the time but no one can find anything wrong with the car. It has done this for about 2 years.

It means to have the engine oil changed and is there for a reason it comes on at certain millage interval so you will change the oil, the hand book that came with the care will tell you how to turn the light of your self, but change the oil and oil filter its to protect the motor from UN wanted servicing so your warranty stays intact, just changing the oil will not turn it off it must be reset

if you are good with cars, you will know that sometimes the check engine light means nothing at all. but if your not, i suggest you go to a dealer to check the problem.

Forget the dealer, unless your car is under warranty. Find a reliable mechanic and go there.

1st- make sure your gas cap is on securely
2nd- put in some fuel cleaner at your next fill up
That light means your emissions are too high for some reason; your car isn't running efficiently.

going to autozone will not fix your problem, all you'll end up doing is buying a part from them, take it to the dealer or a reliable repair shop.
