Pleco should be supplemented with the algae wafers, but at this size should be offered frozen or freeze dried foods as well. Your plecos will reach 24" each if properly cared for, and if not provided with hiding places or a good balanced diet will begin attacking other fish in the tank. They also become territorial as they mature, and will fight one another as well.

And to whom ever suggested it.....Fish no matter what (sp.) DO NOT GROW TO THE SIZE OF THEIR ENVIRONMENT!! I have rescued fish from people who firmly believed this myth, and after their death autopsy revealed that their inner organs continued to grow causing internal bleeding, and crushing of their heart.
While the growth of their 'body' may appear to be restricted they are still growing from within. It is cruel to assume that a fish forced to live in a restricted environment is natural and healthy for the fish. The 'growth restriction' observed by the ignorant is not caused by the tank walls, rather it is by the waste and ammonia that these continually growing fish produce. Which consequently burns their gills, and very slowly, and painfully, kills the fish.
They are animals just like any other creature, and deserve proper care. More so than any other animal because of their specialized 'aquatic lifestyle.'

Do you feed them one each every 3 days ?
- Anymore than that they get lazy and might not clean as much.

I have a pacu in my 55 gal, so my pleco doesn't get algae wafers.
I try to get enough light to the tank, so a little algae will grow.

I even through smushed algae wafer pieces in the tank, hoping the pacu won't bother eating it.

I have a 10 inch pleco in a 29 gallon tank. There is no visible algae in my tank. I have never fed the pleco algae wafers and he seems fine.

Yes, they need the wafers... the wafers contain more than just algae. It has many nutrients. It's commonly believed that pleocs and other algae eaters can just eat the algae in your tank. You need to feed them the wafers for a balanced diet. 10" is kinda big for your 55g tank, nevermind two of them! lol :D

We have 2 tanks and a pleco in each. We feed the wafers every other day. It does not hurt if they get extra food.

yes definately, they also need driftwood to chew and consume. A pleco eats amazing amounts of wood. They also enjoy pieces of cut shrimp as a treat every now and then. I had a 10 and a 12 in a 55 gal with some African Cichlids and they would actually come out to get their wafers when fed.

As plecos become larger and more mature, they become less dutiful to eating algae. Therefore, you have to put algae wafers in the tank frequently to supply enough nutrients for it.

I have two huge plecos in my 55 gal tank, and even though they keep my tank really clean I was told to give them two algae pellets a piece twice a week. The gentleman at my neighborhood pet store stated that there are vitamins and such in the pellets that they could use.

If the tank is clean, continue with the wafers. Plecos will not normally grow bigger than their surroundings. The bigger the tank, the bigger they will grow. I have raised fish most of my life. If they seem happy and healthy and dont' leave the wafers uneaten, continue. And enjoy them!

you are able to certainly feed him algae wafers, in simple terms verify no longer to overfeed him because they can finally end up clouding your water (no remember what the labels say). also, you are able to feed him a slice of zucchini that you sink to the bottom of your tank in one day. in simple terms be particular to eliminate it after 24 hours so it doesn't get rotten contained in the water. you need to locate that your neons will take some bites of vegetables besides! it really is in simple terms one decision yet i have got here across it to be the finest and the single i bypass for rather frequently. Cheers,
