Lonesome Dove was good, strong characters, good plot, compelling reading. Most of Larry McMurtry's works are worth reading.
Anything by Tolkien, but remember they were written as children's books.
John Steinbeck wrote some good books. Of Mice and Men is my favourite. Tough not to be moved by the ending.
Jack London's The Call of the Wild and The Sea Wolf were written early in the 20th century. Both excellent works.
Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is full of great character's and excellent storytelling.
I do like the Old Man and the Sea is excellent.
There are lots to choose from.

The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Pure use of the English language, compelling story, powerful imagery and action. For Whom the Bell Tolls, To Have and Have Not, and the Snows Of Kilimanjaro, all by Hemingway, are close contenders for first.

I don't know that there are any worth remembering, from the 20th century - too much negativity and self-absorption by people who hated themselves and everything that life has to offer. I prefer the 19th century - give me some Mark Twain any time...

Can't pick just one, but anything by Toni Morrison, Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, Lord of the Rings. There are more but I don't want to make too big a list.
