There is no surefire treatment for anything - except to avoid it completely. Jerry Seinfeld noted that most people fear public speaking more than they fear death; so if you have to go to a funeral you're better off being the one in the coffin.
First of all, realize that your audience is on your side. They are not anticipating your failure, they are not hoping for the opportunity to laugh at you. Your audience WANTS you to succeed; they have every expectation that you will do well.
Second, instead of making direct eye contact, which can be unnerving, look at the tops of everyone's head as you address your audience. This gives a convincing illusion that you are continuously keeping eye contact.
Third, practise in front of a mirror, family, friends, that dude at the bus stop. Many "professional business people" admit to writing their speeches in the hotel room the morning of, and rehearsing it in the taxi on the way to. (It's true!) If time allows, know your speech. Notecards work nicely, with words at the beginning of each paragraph in bold letters or highlighted so you can easily find your spot.
Good luck!

There is a great organization that you can join that will help you with speaking in public and having a fear of being social. Toastmasters is a great organization and exists in almost every city. Joining is simple and easy and you get to work with people who like yourself have a fear of speaking in public and want to over come being shy or socially insecure. Also, working with a hypnosis therapist or personal coach could be an added benefit if you are wanting to do this for a specific purpose.

i am in speech class and the teacher that i ahave is amazing and the advise he gives are the best. i am just surprised at my change. two years ago in high school i was scared, looking at the notecards the whole time type of a person and now i actually don't even need notecards. Don't imagine people in their underwear. when you are making eye contact-start from someone in the back and work your back to the front so that you don't get nervous and don't get past the first row. first and most important thing to remeber is to learn and prepare for your speech ahead of time so that when you get up the all you might need is a piece of paper to remind you of your main points. do some sort of movement during speech such as upper body movement(don't over do it) so that you focuse your nervous energy somewhere else. and smile. my teacher is also a theatre guy and what he preaches is public speaking/speech involves acting. technically you are acting which is fine. good luck-i mean it :)

Some people swear by Inderal--a beta blocker that can be taken before a social event or speaking engagement. If you are Pill Phobic----they say if you picture your audience as all stark naked you will feel much more confident standing up there with your clothes on:) I have a friend who was so scared of social situations and public speaking that she enrolled in the Dale Carnegie course----it really did change her life. Good Luck.

Not unless the person takes a 'public speaking' class and practices speaking in public. The only way to overcome stage fright or any fear is to face it dead on and realize that the fear is has no basis and is impractical.

yes the best way is for you when public speaking is to put your sight above the audience and fix that stare at the same spot,i,e, look above the audience so not make eye contact with any one just keep you gaze fixed in the distance above the group,as for social phobia just let your mind wander to plesant things you enjoy whilst listening to the questions being asked of you.do not stare inti ones eyes until you feel comfortable, look over their shoulder but dont be so obvious,it will take practice, dont show you are nervous

I read that this is one of the most common fears; however, I never had this phobia.
Somebody mentioned Toastmasters. There should be one in your community. Also, if you belong to a club or organization that you been with for a long time, offer to MC one of their meetings with its membership. Start small and build up.

Sure, but you have to practice at it and eventually you'll get over your fear and be very comfortable speaking at public and social gatherings.
You might try and join a group that specailizes in this problem.

As with all fears confront it and it will not be bad after a while.
Go to toastmasters, join clubs, go out and talk to people, ask for the time from people, just get used to being out and talking to people and then start talking in front of people.
It will get better.
