The Rolling Stones with out a doubt. Objectively speaking the plethora of music and their ability to produce so many songs of such a long time (four decades) places them above any other rock and roll band.

Man, that's a tough question to answer, especially because of the all of the sub-genres of rock music.

I recently read an opinion that Iggy Pop and the Stooges were the best band produced by the U.S. I don't know if I agree with that, though I love Iggy's music.

Currently, I have a few very favorite bands which I consider the best at what they do for rock music:

Built to Spill is a phenominal guitar band, inspired by Neil Young but definitely with their own indie twist.

Grandaddy is a kind of future-folk indie band with a style like no one else. Soft, nasally vocals and killer lyrics with a slightly science fiction sound.

The Flaming Lips have been around for 20+ years but they keep going strong with similarly futuristic sounds and themes, and I hear their live shows are the best for both sound and theatrics.

Mindless Self Indulgence is tops for techno-punk. Urine and the band are rowdy, bawdy, crude, clever and talented.

TOOL has all the attitude and bizarre carnivale of modern rock music, but sometimes Maynard has too much of an agenda. Still, there's no doubt they have a fantastic sound.

But if I had to pick one all time band to represent rock music, I would have to go with The Pixies. Frank Black's hollerin' and Kim Deal's sexy charm, combined with punk attitude, indie spirit, and real inventiveness make this band one of the greatest ever (as evidenced by their sold out shows all last year for their reunion tour).

I'm currently on a Sonic Youth kick, but the Pixies will always be at the top for me.

Judas Priest. They stay true to their metal roots and still put on an amazing live show. K.K. & Glenn are still in total sync with eachother and Rob's vocals speak for themselves. They are the true Metal Gods!
