I'm a photographer with some knowledge of web diesign but not much, and its been a while since I've taken a web design class. What are the best programs to use? Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop? Once I have put together my site with these programs how do I actually get my site up and running? Also how do I get my own email address?

The first thing to do is purchase/reserve a domain name (www.yourname.com, etc.). There are thousands of registrars out there that can do this for you for a reasonable price. GoDaddy.com is one of the biggest out there.

Next you need to sign up for hosting. A host will take the files that comprise your website and house them on the internet. They will also help you setup your domain name.

You will then need to construct and build your site one of two ways:
Dreamweaver/Frontpage - Using either of these programs you can build a website using the what-you-see-is-what-you-get (wysiwyg) method. Drag & Drop, just like you were working on a PDF. Save the files and upload them to your website.
Hand coding - This will require a stronger knowledge of HTML. You simply code the site by hand using DreamWeaver or notepad.

There's lots of resources out there to help you with either route.

Let's seperate things:

1. Web browser: your target platform. Websites render html and usually javascript on a person's computer. They retrieve the web pages from a webserver. Most browsers also support plugins, which allow the rendering of other types of files that aren't html.

2. Photoshop - Primarily an image processing program. A tool that most pros use for creating or editting embedded graphic elements. Otherwise, irrelevant to the question of website development.

3. Flash - A program that allows you to create multimedia "Flash movies". There is an accompanying flash client plugin that can be installed in a lot of browsers to render flash movies. However, flash is a thing unto itself, is not html, nor related to it in any way,

4. Dreamweaver - A "what you see is what you get" webpage design tool that "renders" html.

So the first thing I should say is that the pros don't use Dreamweaver typically -- they hand code html and css. This is because most websites are actually programs, not static html. Dreamweaver has added a lot of features that let people who for example, use PHP to develope a website, can still use Dreamweaver.

5. What are your goals? This is the most important question to answer for yourself. What should this website do, and what features will it need? The answer to those questions will guide you. Off the top of my head, it sounds like you might be best served by looking at a hosting system, like the ones that Apple provides with .mac. For example, this is a website for an artist I know. It was created with a combination of a serverside blogging system called Serendipity, and the .mac gallery. Since she uses a mac, .mac makes it easy for her to move images to her gallery.
The site didn't have to be as minimalist as it is... that was her desire. The important thing to realize is that the first step is deciding on what pages the site will include.

I find Dreamweaver the easiest to use. It's very visual, and requires no knowledge of HTML (hyper-text markup link). First, you need a "host" site, and a domain name. A host site is kind of like a "myspace" account, only it's completely free of whatever you want to put on it, and depending on how much you pay, is how much space you get on it (space as in megabytes, or gigabytes).

I use www.godaddy.com. It's cheap. Around $60/year for 500 MBs. You then need to buy a domain name. The domain name is your www..com/org/net...etc. That is an additional $5-6/year.

Once everything is registered and finished, you should be able to type in this into your address bar:

ftp://.

It wil then bring up a login. Use the login username and password you signed up with your account for, and it will open a folder. Whatever you put into this folder will be available on your website (ie pictures, mp3s, etc.) There will most likely be one file there already named "Index.html". What you need to do is make your website through Dreamweaver, and make the main page (main as in when someone types www..com, it goes to this page) Index.html. Just replace it. Then from there, you can import pictures, other website links, mp3s, etc.

For the own email address, if you DO go with godaddy, you will have the ability of a free email as @.com. Of course, bigger and better emails can be purchased. They make it very simple.

Hope that helps!

In yet another of your questions, you state, "i'm attempting to save up money for a $600 computer. all the pastime provides are you need to be 15 years of age or older!! i'm in undemanding words 13! does absolutely everyone have some good and quick approaches to make money?" So, how are you going to presently declare to be "a educated vet that has been interpreting for more effective or less 5-6 years"? did you comprehend that that is illegitimate to impersonate a veterinarian, and that you will be charged with fraud and misreprestation for providing medical suggestion at the same time as offering your self as a veterinarian? And in case you ever plan on truly transforming into a veterinarian, some thing like this on your history receives rid of any possibility of you getting your license. Please reconsider your website, and end impersonating a veterinarian in this website.

So you want your own website and you have a little knowledge on web designing. Well lets take some classes first. Lets brush up with HTML again. Please follow this link to do so.

http://www.w3schools.com/

Once done completely now lets think how to host your website. Ask yourself certain questions. Will you host your own website on your own computer? That requires your computer to be on 24 x 7 and connected to Internet. You might need a T1 or T2 line depending on your needs. You require softwares form adobe, macromedia to work with photography and others. Again its you to decide. Now about an email address. Now to be professional you can get your own domain name. You can search for anyone of them who provides. Once when you get a domain of your choice you are done. You can design your own website, add your email address in the Contact me list. This is too costly affair and involves a lot of expertise and dedicated staff. If possible you can ask someone else to host your website. There are many web hosting companies who can do this for you. One most popular service is provided by homestead. You can visit their website at http://www.homestead.com/

Hope that answers your question.

Once you design and build your HTML/CSS/PHP pages you need to register for a domain name (www.thisismywebsite.com or whatever you like that is available) and either sign up for a subscriber that provides you webspace to upload your webpages to, or set up a webserver yourself (you need to be more technically inclined to do this).

You then point the domain name to the IP address of your website, and then when you type in the www. URL you'll be directed to the website.

After that you can add you site to search engine databases like google.

Many webspace providers will provide you with your own email address, so check the package that they offer. then you'll have an email with
yourName@yourwebsite.com

Hope this helps. You can e-mail me if you have any more questions.
