I've never had drugs (except those used in common medicines, but that's not what we're talking about here), so I have an outsider's perspective. My impression is that taking drugs is not really related to stress, kids take drugs because it's 'cool', also the teenage rebellion sort of thing. Some kids might try drugs just because they're curious what all the fuss is about, and then of course they get hooked and can't stop.

No, its nothing to do with pressure of studies or competition. Addictive personalities are just that and its in the genes/brain chemistry. Its just that people (not saying teens particularly) select whatever is readily available to them...tobacco, alcohol or drugs. So if friends are doing any of those and its offered, they will try and the addictive personality type will continue on longer than the rest.
However, non-addictive people, may try something once or twice but will drift away eventually and steer clear of those who have habits, as it makes them feel uncomfortable eventually because they dont "fit-in" with them. If you dont know anyone who does drugs, or smokes or drinks, then its unlikely you will purposely go out and find some by yourself.
Anyhoo....that is why you get similar groups of people that all behave the same, they separate or cling together, according to what THEY find acceptable. Its not judgemental either way, its not about how cool you feel, its about exploring the boundaries via availability and realising just what makes you feel comfortable with in life.
Unfortunately for many with addictive personalities, or those who had a painful childhood/period in their life, escapism (even for a short while) is more attractive than appreciating lifes free gifts. Perhaps their parents had issues too or never taught them how to deal with trauma/emotional issues in a good way.....so they cope the only way they know how?

Well, I do not think that the efforts to become better, get higher can push anyone to drugs!
As a matter of fact, I think that the people without high aims and dynamic personality could get into drugs!

my generations (early20) grew up close with drugs and world that glorified drugs. one other was sports and entertainment
i noticed lots of my generations who pursue those careers they tend to see drug as a solution to problem
because we grew up using drug as a solution to our stress in school or not making ends meet with parents and friends
plus the consequences that we saw with athelets or celibrities with drug abuse were light
