and I have asked a few questions regarding their situation. I seem to get horrible answers abut how he should be charged with stat. rape (she's 16 and he's 17) and how horrible this is. Okay, now I agree 100% this shouldn't have happened when it did - no doubt BUT my gosh, it did happen and they've been together a long time. I'm in my 40s and there were girls having babies when I was in high school back then. These two are very intelligent people and they made a mistake BUT this baby is going to have all the love and support we can give (same with the kids) and I think that is the RIGHT way to react to this situation, don't you? You can't turn around and change it. They're staying in school, he's going to the military or coast guard. They actually have good heads on their shoulders with a boo boo behind them. My father said I was the best mistake he ever made and that's what this child will hear. Agree??????

They may have made a mistake and be very young, but how can anyone honestly say that throwing a child's father in jail for THIS (not like he abused or violated or actually committed a crime that harmed the girl) is better for the child, the mother, or even society. I wish the best of luck to your soon-to-be-growing family.

So you are going to raise the kid as he pisses off to the army and she is in school? Are you really rich? Last time I checked kids tend to cost a lot of money, as does school.
Yeah I would be so happy to find out that I was just a "good" or the "best" mistake in my parents life, I would really feel special about that. Last time I checked that kind of contradicts itself. That is like being in a "good" car crash because you won some money in the end, but you can't walk anymore.
About that whole stat. rape thing, that is dumb I mean it is not like he was 25 or something. Everyone has had a year or two younger or older girlfriend or boyfriend before, especially in high school.
At least they are taking the responsibility, but maybe consider condoms and the birth control pill for next time.
Good luck see you on Maury

First of all....if he is 17 and she 16, it is not stat-rape! If he were 18, yes. Anyone telling otherwise is extremely ignorant. Next, It's true that they are sort of young for this life-altering endeavor....but if indeed they have good heads on their shoulders as you say...then something tells me they will definitely be successful parents. They'll learn as they go...the way many adults in their shoes do in this situation. The good thing is that they have an extended family readily to assist and love this incredible baby that is to be born. Many people will look at this negatively...but I bet a million bucks,...this baby will grow up to make a huge positive impact in this world.
And yes....if this baby hears that he or she was the best mistake...his/her self-confidence will soar to great heights.
Good luck to all of you and Congratulations!!!!

Agreed. You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders, and know how to make the best of a bad situation. That child should have all the love and support possible. Ideally, your son and his girlfriend should get married.
You were the best mistake your father ever made? Hey, a backhanded compliment is still a compliment!

Well, different people respond differently to a negative-positive statements. I would wait till a child was well into their adolescent years or even past them before engaging them in such a deep issue which at younger years you cant possibly comprehend, except the word mistake. That is what many children register. Next, people make mistakes, but a 16 and 17 year old couple are hardly terms for statutory rape. My best advice is to just love them unconditionally and accept them openly as it seems you are. They will have enough opposition as is. As still somewhat children themselves help guide them and provide them with wisdom as they begin this journey of life at an early stage.

Congratulations on being a grandfather.
You need to assume your grandfather role, and lead this very young couple, get them help where needed, and lastly ... let go to let them have their lives.
