It seems like national democrats like Nancy Pelosi know more about the French or the Germans than they do folks in Tuscaloosa, Hattiesburg, or Lexington. What do you think?

After seven answers...is this the best that you can do? No Democrat, not from the south, has won a southern electoral vote since Kennedy!
Clinton was not a racist. He won electoral votes in the South. Neither was Carter...he won in the south.

As a Democrat, I would like it if more national politicians paid attention to the South. There are lots of things going on here--many of our cities vote Dem now, and many rural areas are fed up with poverty and losing jobs overseas (though I know that issue is probably bigger than any one party). We need to raise the federal minimum wage. That will benefit the South as well as other places. There are other issues too. It's not like the Democrats ignore us, but it's important to realize that there probably are a few swing voters down here. AND there are a lot of ultra-liberals who will vote for 3rd party candidates or not vote, and the Democrats could get these votes by truly making humanitarian concerns (poverty, employment, health care, etc.) a priority. The best way to a person's heart is through his/her wallet...

I agree the fun Democrats (southerners) left the party long ago. Remember when George Wallace backed Bob Dole, that was a shocker and the drive by media ignored it. Said little when a district held by a Democrat for 134 years in kentucky voted in a Republican. Then when they want your vote comment about the rebel flag on your vehicle and your gun rack. The Presidency Ain't happening without DIXIE. Amen

Well, Clinton was from Arkansas, and isn't Gore from Tennessee?
By the way, though, the French and the Germans are actually rather important, as are many nations besides the US, and I would like my national leaders to know a thing or two about them.

There are still a lot of southern local Democrats, They vote Democrat for county judge DA;s etc but Republican state wide and for federal offices. Most of the local Democrats with the exceptions of the city ones are conservative.

the democratic party once ruled the south until 1964 after johnosn passed the civil rights act. since then the south has gotten republican little by little. there is a quote by lyndon b. johnson after he signed the act "i know this will hurt our party among rural white southern voters". johnson was right and it is unfortunate becasue democrats hold the interest of all average americans.

Maybe they're filling in the gap left by the Republican party spending so much time pandering to the extreme, but wealthy Theocons that they have forgotten there are not only moderates, but Log Cabins, and a world community. Just a guess.

Well, maybe if so many Southerners weren't still so upset about the civil rights movement or losing the Civil War, they would be able to have an intelligent conversation with mainstream Democrats.

You are so right, but the Democrats at least are consistent, as they are out of touch and disengaged from reality on virtually every issue of the day, so them being out of touch with the South just becomes typical for them, nothing else.

Since it is a dumb question, here is a dumb answer.
The Democrat party (of which I am a loyal subscriber) would not watch the Beverly Hillbillies, they would be inspired to pursuade Granny to start a philanthropic foundation to help homeless pets.

LOL, especially Loony Byrd, that still is his favorite show;) LOL
However, it's a shame that such insanity holds seats in the House and Senate, that just goes to show you how infectious liberalism is, as well as dangerous:(
