I am a white 27 year old mother. Both me and my son prefer rap music over all others. I do think that some of it gets a liitle out of hand, but I love it. It does not encourage it, it is no different than a story being told. If a person wants to say that it encouraged them to murder, steal, etc. then they already had it in them to do that. A song, movie, or book cannot take the blame for a person's stupidity. I think rap is an asset to all cultures. It defines the time we are in and what is going on in parts of the world. There are still alot of narrow minded, ignorant people out there and I truly pity them for that.

Rap is a form of Black people representing their cultural identities. Now, rap is misogynistic, and highly contraversial, but at the same time, is at the cutting edge of mainstream modern day culture. Who doesnt have an opinion on rap? I rest my case. If you look back, rap was started by Public Enemy in the 1970, when we saw a shift from Mowtown to more controversial lyrical content. Back then, it was all to so with representing black culture, and reaffirming black identitiy. Now it has created its own genre of music and from that we have rap topping the charts all over the world. Once used as a tool for expression, it is now has its own meaning, and is a language in itself. It is niave to simply say that rap is bad because it has a parentsl advisroy label on it. Rap is influential in that if it wasnt for rap, i certainly would not be the person I am today. It influences on many different levels. if it was not for rap, Bhangra would not be what it is today - a lot of Bhangra track use hip hop references. And the term 'RAP' is too broard to umbrella such a large spectrum. Within 'rap' you have mainstream which is more commercial, theres the backbone - hip hop which is whats its all about, and an underground flex too - like UK Drum and Bass and Garage. Sex, drugs and violence is just what the media companies use to market the products - San Andreas - Grand Theft Auto - need i say anymore. dont be niave when you judge rap - dont hate, appreciate. Im a true ganagta aint i to all my hip hop brothers, keep representing, and anyone making music- -you will get heard. keep going. respect.

R.A.P to me= Retards.Attempting.Poetry
-a. I pity anyone who thought that rap is music that makes Blacks look good. It is one of the things that makes some people think their culture is low- even other Blacks.
b. It DOES encourage violence, sex, and drug abuse, and also seems to be encouraging having children out-of-wedlock and hate against Whites and possibly Asians. Why do people feel this way? The lyrics should explain that.
c.To me, it's just a couple of idiots screaming into microphones.
d. While other music may be offensive sometimes too-some people have said certain country music is "sexist" or that 1980s heavy metal is Satanic (I don't think it is....just the videos.....)- rap still is worse because it contains much more profanity, "bad behavior", etc.
e. It's not "an artistic form of music"! It's just people who can't write poetry jazzing their pathetic, low-level poems up with profanity and screaming the poems into microphones.

Right wing conservatives, mostly hate rap and black people. Simple dont say no, thats not true it is. Rap is no different from the immigration issue the majority wants to keep the minority from expressing their selves. Listen everyone is aware that rap can be volgar and cruel. Freedom of expression and the battle of what the african american poor in this country go though. Rap should be an impowerment not a detramental form of music. Rap is slowly changing i believe with songs less vulgar and with more influential messages.

I think some of it is good and makes valuable social commentary, and some of it is, for lack of a better term, sh*t.
I don't think quality rap music encourages violence, sex, and drug abuse, but face it, that lifestyle is a reality for millions and they want music they can relate to. The good quality rap is just poetry (however gritty) set to some beats.
The rap I can't stand is the more recent stuff, where everyone and his dog thinks they have what it takes to be a rapper (I'm looking at you, 50 Cent)... When all they have to rap about is girls shakin their booties, smoking dope, going to clubs and being a P-I-M-P... just sad. There is no artistic value in that.

People have that idea because the general rap music you hear is all about sex, drugs, violence. But hey what is rock n' roll sex, drugs? There's a big stereotype for each genre of music. But when I listen to rap and he's reffering to a girl in an inappropriate way I'm offended but if I listen to my music and they make a reference to a girl or sex drugs violence it's not usually "let's screw and get high" ya know it's more deep so I'm not offended. But also how can you relate to what their saying??I don't know about you but I like music I can listen to and get lost in not "let's screw and get high". Some of it actually means something but if it's "let's screw and get high" I won't bother listening to it.Rap wasn't always so graphic it just changed and morphed into something else like every other type of music

Rap is just a way they express their self. Some rappers rap about everyday things, pain, the struggle, sorrow and just stuff to make people be like i understand what he saying. the people that say rap is a bad influence don't really listen to the true depth of the lyrics they just hear them talking bout violence, drugs and profound language and automatically think its a bad influence but they don't even understand the point the rapper is trying to make.Just cause someone listens to rap doesnt mean they're going to follow the influence or think "HEY IM GOING TO GO OUT AND SHOOT SOMEONE JUST BECAUSE 50 CENT SAID HE SHOT SOMEONE".

Rap isn't an asset to anyone it talks about sex drugs and violence and what society is proud of that. If it reflects real life in the drug world shouldn't society be trying to change it with more uplifting music.

I don't like rap. Mainly because of the music videos. The videos insult women. I also don't like rap because Mothers Against Hard Rock chooses to ignore it. They like to pick on rock. To me, rap is worse because of the content. It does encourage violence and sex.
