although you can get desktops quite easily from offices and business,s laptops are a different matter
i recently got a secondhand cpmpaq amarda laptop from a office supplies store,it was secondhand and only had a pcmcia cd-rw,but i paid £125,so you should be expecting to pay £400+ for what you want, the biggest problem is graphics, even when you pay £999 you sometimes still only get on-board graphics as pci-express are very expensive in a laptop
saying that,if you look on ebay you can find some great laptops ,and even with 64mb graphics, they should play most games up to 1024x768
you should visit all the local business,s and prepare what you are gonna say, like"i am a computer engineer still in training and was wondering if you can donate any old desktops and laptops to help with my training"
some bussiness,s will be more than happy to donate computers as it would cost them to dispose of them, ecspecially laptops and monitors, because of the screens, ect
just be patient, and ask and you shall find
good luck

Well, there is a store called Fry's Electronics that sells relatively decent priced laptops. If name brand doesn't matter to you, they have laptops around $500-800 with decent specifications. They have stores in Northern/Southern California, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Oregon, & Washington
You could also buy online if you want.

keep an eye out for the classifieds. Many businesses when updating all their equipment will have an auction to get rid of their current equipment. Also, there are always estate auctions, school auctions and bank auctions.
