Can there really ever be justice on stolen land? Does the hypocrisy of the way in which America was established (i.e. on slavery and the theft and murder of Native American land and people) negate the legal system and the concept of liberty and justice for all?

Can I stress that this is a question to which I expect ANSWERS. Why does everyone on this site think that if a question is asked, then that is their view? Please refrain from hurling abuse at me for asking a perfectly valid question. Many thanks.

Gee, now lets see. America is hypocritic because it was established with slavery and the theft and murder of Native Americans and their land. If you look at the rest of the world that's the way this whole planet has been settled. It has been through conquest, theft, war, slavery. Every continent (with the exception of Antartica) has been settled this way. It's not known if there were other human beings on this continent when Native Americans first crossed the land bridge between Asia and America but you can bet your bottom dollar that those newcomers took their land the old fashioned way. By theft, war, murder and slavery. Which by the way was practiced by Native Americans before Columbus ever saw land in the western hemisphere. So you can cry over justice but that's the way it is. Get over it.

No country on this planet would be in existence, if it were not for wars. Native Americans fought each-other long before Europeans came to this land. Slavery was initiated by the tribal leaders who sold their own people into slavery. It is not just the history of America that is so terribly bloody. European History and Asian History is just as bad.

Liberty and Justice were established after the warfare. It has gone down hill ever since.

What land throughout history was NOT "stolen"? It IS still happening in the Middle East and Africa. Slavery still exsists in Asia and Africa. At least this country had the sense to abolish slavery. At least this country has been able to grow and advance into the 21st century whilst other people are still eating with their hands while sitting on the floor.

And no, America was NOT established on slavery. In the Northeast, it started as a dropping off place for those who were being persecuted for their religous beliefs (Pilgrims/Puritans) They wanted freedom to practice their religion. England wanted them OUT.

In Florida, the Spainards took over, decimating the Indian tribes there.

As far as complaining about slavery, it was the Southern Democrats who WANTED to continue to enslave people. The Republican party was founded and Abraham Lincoln was the FIRST Republican President, and we all know that Honest Abe was AGAINST slavery.

It was the blacks in Africa that benefited from slavery, it was how they got rid of their competition and how they took over land. Sell your enemy to who ever is buying.

And in the 200+ years this country has been the world leader in inventions and technology. People, when given the freedom to use their talents can do amazing things.

Learn how throughout history lands have been aquired. Look at how other countries have "stolen" their land.

Natives did not believe that the land belonged to them, so how can it have been stolen? Slavery came later, after the first whites came to America. Slavery was abolished- eventually, albeit not soon enough. Natives were treated horribly and those who did so have long ago passed away. Hopefully, they got what they deserved, but you can't blame current generation for what others did hundreds of years ago. Our legal system is not perfect, but it is better than in many other countries. We're still tinkering with it. Liberty and Justice for all is an ideal we strive for but, unfortunately, do not always achieve.

I know you want answers and not opinions, but your question is very dependant on points of view, ie opinions. therefore it cant be helped.

I'm english, dont need to be american to have a stab at this.

There can be justice on stolen land. Just because the land that something occurs on was 'stolen' doesnt take away from the event occuring in the here and now. Eg Murderer tried, convicted and sentenced to death on 'stolen' land. Doesnt take anything away from the justice asministered there. Justice is simply being held accountable for your wrong doings.

Your premise is that one group of people illegally took over the land of another group of people, which makes your question seriously flawed. To determine who the "real" owner of the land is, you would have to determine which point in time you want to use as your baseline.

You apparently assume that "Native Americans" always owned all of the land in what is now the United States. Which tribe are you referring to and which peace of land? It is historical fact that American Indian tribes were frequently at war with one another, with land constantly changing hands. So which group of "thieves" are you referring to?

You are also assuming that "Native Americans" were the original occupiers of the land. That also is false. You simply picked your villain (white Europeans, apparently) and then established some hypothetical timeline to support your flawed reasoning.

It may surprise you to know that slavery still exists in many parts of the world, especially in Africa and the Near East. It was much more common 300 years ago, of course, but the United States abolished it about 85 years after we became a nation. Perhaps it's time for the rest of the world to do the same.

You can only get justice from the originators of injustice who (lucky for them)are by now long gone,,the ppl today had no part in the atrocities then,
The point about slavery is,IT DID NOT START IN EUROPE,
Its part of the human mentality when capturing an enemy,If theyre not killed theyre made slaves as with every tribe of every nation,,Native americans had tribal slaves as did the Africans. The English were slaves to turks before the slavery of africans. If genghis Khan had continued to europe, all who pathed the mongolian onslaught would have been slaves then.
It all depends on who does it 1st,not one nation is immune to inhumane ideals,You just got to look properly and see.
Why? Because its human nature ,unfortunately today A lot should be done to enhance the culture of orignal inhabitants.
Just do it!!

I'm sorry but it is a dumb question. Thats like asking can their every be justice in this world. The history of the planet is a war filled, killing the other person for their land history. On slavery? Thats a practice that was formed in africa. Africans actually sold the slaves(which was legal in the past) to the explorers i guess you would call them. so why would it be unjust to use something that you legally bought in that present era? I guess my answer would be for you yes. part 2 no

This is really a rather absurd concept.

Have you thought about asking the present population of France to give up its land since they "stole" it from the Urnfield Celts?

Should the present British government order the population to return to Normandy? Jutland? Saxony?

Mayhap the Irish will get out of Dublin which was founded by the Norwegians?

And, while we're at it, will the Bantu populations of subsaharan Africa return to their west African point of origin and surrender the lands they have conquered to the Nilotic peoples in the east of Africa or the Bushman of the south?

There are very few places on Earth that are inhabited by their "original" occupants.

Considering virtually every country was created or conquered in a war at least once in the history of time, I think most countries are in the same boat. Other cultures have also impeded on natives (south america, Africa, Europe), so it is a common problem. However, I believe modern law prevents this from occurring now and protects all people from these past atrocities.
