The twelve yellow stars on a blue field were officially adopted as the symbol of the European Community on 26 May 1986.

Increasing the number of stars every time new countries join would be silly.

There were six original founding countries.

There were 12 members, then 15, now 25. I think they got fed up adding more stars all the time. This is not the US of A, you know.

It looks nicer.12 is a nice number...like hours on a clock. 25 would look too gaudy and they's keep having to change the flag everytime a new country joined.

there were 6 founding members of the EU (France, West Germany, Luxembourg, Italy, Netherlands & Belgium).
