Everything goes in the washing machine. Some items do need some protection (washing bag, special detergents, low temperature etc) but if it is not machine washable, I don't buy it. When in doubt I still put in the washing machine: if it doesn't survive, it was not worth having because life is too short to wash things by hand.
By the way, same thing with the dishwasher: anything that get sort of yukky after a while, is not electric or very fragile ends up in my dishwasher: plastic steps, plastic children's toys, potties, booster seats etc!

I'll handwash some garments. If you're concerned about quality underwear, then hand wash it. You can also use a mesh "lingerie bag" (available at most discount stores) and wash them in the machine on gentle cycle. The bag will prevent them from getting beaten around. Then, hang up or lay flat to air dry.

Occasionally...I might when forced have to do a piece or two of hand laundry...however most things can be machine washed even if it says to hand wash if you use cold water and a gentle cycle on your machine.
Underwear...to keep nice, first place in a lingerie laundry bag and place it in the washing machine and wash on cold water..gentle cycle. The lingerie bag keeps the peices from getting tangled together or underwires from becoming damaged.
The lingerie laundry bags are cheap...last forever and can be found at places like Target or Bed Bath & Beyond.

If you've got time to be playing around on your man's computer then you obviously are using the washing machine when you should be hand washing his delicate clothes.

I do not do hand washing. I have no time for that. All my clothing goes into the washing machine. Different loads ofcourse. Depending on what type of clothing it is.

I hand wash to get the big stains out. Then I put on the stain remover and then put in the regular washer. I don't treat any laundry special. I throw it all in in large on cold with some great Shaklee laundry detergent. The colors don't leak or fade and everything is clean and smells great. Saves lots of $.

It all gets wahed in the machine. Panties get washed in a load by themselves on a gentle cycle and either hung to dry if they are delicate or just chunked in the dryer if they are cheapies.
