Matter of physics. Rotation and flight. Footballs in the days before the forward pass was legal were almost round although somewhat like the modern football.

Do you mean a football or that rugby-shaped ball used in the US version of "football" (sic)

The answer to the first is obvious, the answer to the second is as obscure as the reasons or calling that game "football" in the first place.

If you are referring to American Football, the ball is shaped that way to that it has an unpredictable bounce.

if you look on an acrobatic airplane it is in the shape of a foot ball that desighn allows air to flow sloweron the bottom than on the top creating lift it alows the ball to go fartheer

way way waaay back in time the game that modern soccer came from, used human heads (of the tribes beaten enemy) wrapped in linens. The modern soccer ball closely resembles this in size and shape

If your'e talking about English/proper footballs, then the sphere helps them to roll, fly etc.

Since you're probably talking about american footballs, then I don't have a clue.

you mean ball shaped? Think about it....the game requires the use of your foot....the foot connects with the ball....foot...ball....

The football is that shape so that it rolls.

If you mean Gridiron balls they are like that because they are a rip off of rugby balls.
