If you really want to lose your accent, you could go to an english instructor who could teach you exercises to improve the sounds you want to change. Also remember that English is spoken in many countries and has many accents as well, and it is important to pick the one you would like to sound like. Good Luck!!

The best way to get rid of your foreign accent is to practice. With the internet, this is easy to do. The 'neutral' accent in America is from the Mid West part of the country. Find online radio stations, listen to them, and practice what you hear. Look for stations in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and practice what you hear.

Also, put your tongue slightly between your teeth when you speak English. This phrase will help with that problem: The problem with English is that you have to keep putting your tongue between your teeth.

Practice with native english speakers. The best way is immersion. Go to the US, Britian or Australia and speak only English 24/7. If you are in school apply for a student exchange, if you are in college aim for a semester/term abroad. If you are an adult, there are intensive immersion schools available that offer courses as short as 2-weeks.

WANTING to speak without an 'accent' is important, I know many Americans with foriegn root whose English is heavily accented despite years in this country.

Why would you want to lose the accent? My husband is Aussie and I love his accent! He has been in the States for 10 years now, I don't think an accent ever totally goes away. Look at Arnold!

to directly answer your question, as to "how to get ride of my foreign accent", would be to attend accent reduction courses with a certified and trained Speech-Language Pathologist. depending on your location, there may already be community programs for this need. i do know that in the san francisco bay area many corporation hire on a speech-langauge pathologist for the sole purpose. a large majority of the technological industry in the silicoln valley are immigrants and have fairly thick accents. the idea is so that they can be understood better by all co-workers. it is not to completely remove one's accent and take away their cultural identity.

to give you a general idea as to what to expect, your therapy sessions can take place with small group of people with the same goal (accent reduction) or one-on-one private therapy. the therapy itself is basic articulation exercises, auditory discrimination of English sounds, and lots of practice. it is very effective and one can usually see excellent progress within a month. if you live in an area that is not culturally diverse like the sf bay area, i would suggest looking up in the yellow pages the speech language pathologists in your area.

what ever path you end up choosing, i wish you the best of luck!
