Doctors see patients in their offices and then dictate the notes from that visit. Those notes (usually on a microcassette) are then transcribed by a medical transcriptinist and then given back to the doctor for review and to be added to the patient's file. There are various methods of medical transcription now. The doctor can either dictate it onto a microcassette, he can dictate into a computer file which is then downloaded, or he can have a computer system that automatically transcribes his notes.

To own a transcription company would require the computer system that the doctors would use to dictate into or some transcription machines that the transcriptionists would use. It would require some transcriptionists who are very good at thier jobs as the reports must be very accurate, including medical terminology, English grammar and formatting. There is a lot more to owning the company that just the transcription, though - such as billing, getting/delivering the tapes, maintaining the equipment, paying the transcriptionists, etc., etc. Although the concept is easy, it is a very time-consuming business and one that you cannot take time off from easily since doctors need their reports back within 24 hours and are there Monday through Friday and sometimes on Saturday.

I would not suggest owning or starting this type of company if you know nothing of medical transcription. But good luck if it is what you attempt.

AV8RGAL has an excellent answer. I personally do not do transcription but do medical histories and transcription editing. My business partner handles the transcription end of things. We're completely digital and employ several people across the U.S. who may or may not work for a physican in their area.

Our company also specialized in worker's compensation and offer physicians on staff who can rate reports.

Transcription is a rapidly growing and changing field. I would highly recommend that if you're interested to obtain medical terminology and anatomy and physiology education. Our clients dislike having just typists as transcriptionists. They want them to understand the report and be able to point out an inaccuracy or contradition on a report.

Medical transcription is taking the notes a doctor makes about a patient, usually on a hand-held tape recorder, and transcribing it into the patients files by hand. (well, by type LOL) You can start a business of your own, or do as a friend of mine did and get hooked up via the hospital, and do it from your home with your computer. As to the specifics of starting your business, I have no idea. You might check with your local hospital and ask them, or try your local Chamber of Commerce and ask them as to the need in your area for such.
