Barry Sanders
Emmitt Smith had the advantage with an offensive line that was so huge, he practically started with positive yardage each time he got the ball. I am not taking anything away from Emmitt, but if Barry had that line, Sanders would be holding the career yardage record.
Barry Sanders did what he did on the field without much offensive line support. He was practically the only bright spot on the team. Sanders carried the team on his shoulders the way he carried the ball in his arms.
Emmitt Smith was in a stronger offensive schemed system. Switch players and the numbers will most likely be off. Just remember, Emmitt Smith had to CATCH Barry Sanders mark to reach #2 on the all-time list (and Barry played in less games than Emmitt did to reach the second spot on the list). Barry retired out of his own volition, showing he wanted to play to win, not break records. Emmitt, who is a very nice and charitable person as well, focused on breaking the record.
Barry Sanders hands down!

I am from Detroit, so I know Barry. Growing up, I loved Emmitt Smith and the Cowboys are still my fav team. Yes, Emmitt broke the record- but he is not better than Barry. In an interview with Fox, Emmitt credited Barry as being the best. Statistically they look equal, but if you watched them both then you know that Barry played on the worst team in the league for his entire 10 year career. On the other hand, Emmitt had an All-star cast and an o-line that averaged 345lbs. Barry is the best, if you need more proof then ask Emmitt Smith.

Who is the best? It depends.
If you want an RB who gets you the tough yard? Emmitt over Barry.
If you want an RB that no one can touch? Barry over Emmitt.
I will say this: Emmitt had the best offensive line EVER. No RB will have an O-Line that good for another 20 years.
If Barry had an O-Line like Emmitt had? He would have broken every record and every defensive back's ankle in the NFL because if Barry had Dallas's O-Line he would have wrecked havoc in the 2ndary.
I think Barry was a better playmaker, but I think I'd give Emmitt the nod for the tough yard category. In the end, that's what got #22 three rings.

Not to completely take away from what Smith achieved, but he set his records with one of the best offensive lines ever assembled, and an incredible team around him, both offense and defense. Sanders accomplished what he did while never having a good team around him. Barry Sanders is the only reason the Lions were even somewhat competitive for the years that he played. If youre looking at stirctly accomplishments, then it's Smith. If you're talking about talent and ability, then it's definitely Barry Sanders. Even Smith has admitted that the records would be Sanders' if he had stayed around longer.

Barry Sanders. Put him behind Emmitt's O-Line and give him a hall of famer QB and WR and he would have been unstoppable. Oh wait, Barry was unstoppable without that. Barry couldn't get you 1 yard on 3 and 1 if you needed it, but he could get you 90 on 1st and 10 time and time again. He ran circles around everyone, just watch the clip of him against New England.

Sorry, if Barry Sanders had Emmitt Smith's offensive line he would have rushed for 2500 yards a season and rushed for 20-25,000 yards in his career. There is no comparing them. It's not even close. It's like comparing a butter knife to a chainsaw. They do similar things, but one is so much better at cutting things.

emmitt smith by far, all that matters is the fact that he is the all time rushing leader. He also held the single season TD record for a few years. Emmitt had a couple of bad teams in dallas, the lions it seemed always made the playoffs, though not very deep. Why do you think barry retired, he had a bad year and a bad team
