the biggest cons i think of would be...
1.you might drown
2. boards can be kind of expensive -depends on what you consider expensive
3. if you don't do it all the time you have to sort of "relearn" taking most of the year off from it, you really seem to loose alot of the skill.

that said though, its the greatest thing ever. i learned from some guy named john on a beach. i talked to him about surfing, was interested, he had an extra board and taught me.

larger boards are easy for beginners than smaller boards
the key to basic riding is paddling fast enough and then snapping yourself up onto the board in one swift motion and being the right spot on the board when you do so, which is one reason larger boards are easier as they let you be a little further up or back and still keep going. too far back and it bottoms out and you just sort of stall and sink, too far forward and the nose tips into the water and throws you, sort of like a teeter-tator, though its fairly thrilling in its own way to jump up on a board and see the nose sinking closer to the wave and know that you are about to be thrown.

so yeah thats basically it, paddle your butt off, grip the sides of the board like you are about to do a push up, push up, pull your legs and feet under you real fast, stand up and your surfing. ok its easier said then done.

Surfing is so much fun, glad to hear you want to put the time and work in to learn. The pros and cons of it are like any other sport. You may have some struggles and some falls that won't be too pretty, or feel pretty at that. I'm sure there are plenty if places around HB you can walk into and request lessons, there are a lot of surf shops and places that rent that stuff out along PCH, they could probably help you. The thing with surfing.....be patient, hardly anyone stands up and is able to ride a wave the first few times and be brave, bigger waves are easier to ride than small ones, also use a long board to learn, short boards take some skill. Good luck and have fun!
