YES! The thermostat is a vital part of the engine--it gets the engine to its ideal operating temperature as quickly as possible and keeps it at an even temperature by circulating the coolant through the radiator and back into the block. It is also there to dump the coolant in case the car has a catastrophic problem.

Without the thermostat, the car would overheat and the engine block would crack under the stress...and you would have a major repair bill on your hands.

In short, your car cannot operate correctly without a thermostat. There's a reason auto manufacturers spend money on that particular part.

The Thermostat is there to keep the engine at optimal operating temperature. If you run with no thermostat, then the water will constantly flow through the engine. This would extend warm up times and might cause the car to not perform well under certain circumstances. It's there for a reason and they're super cheap. I mean, like $15.00. They are also easy to replace.

Most do not understand that a thermostat also slows down coolant so the radiator has time to pull the heat. So.. you could have a vehicle that never warms up.. or one that overheats. Put a thermostat.. 195 degree in it.. and drive it like you stole it

Yes. Without one, coolant will constantly circulate throught the engine, preventing it from ever reaching operating temperature. A cold engine suffers more from wear and I could be wrong, but I believe it also affects emissions.
